This Is Us (2016)
Gee to Wee to Meh
I was die hard in the beginning. A fresh look at an imperfect family who loves despite it all. So much there that anyone can relate to.
Then Randall's story started doing to the story what his character was doing to the family - sucking the life out of it. Making it all about him and his neuroses. But at least he had this patient wife and adorable daughters, who planned such a sweet memorial for their grandfather. I waited for their storylines, but was once again disappointed. Enter Deja, and Randall seemed obsessed with this new project, to the neglect of what he did have, eager to exploit her to show the world his virtue. There was the lame attempt to give Tess the gender confusion story but for the most part, Randall was exhausting to watch, most seasons.
Last two episodes? Hit then miss. What I kept expecting to see on the train, and disappointed it didn't happen, was a cradle holding a newborn Kyle, waiting to be reunited with Mommy all these years. Or maybe Jack cuddling him in bed when She rolls over to see him.
After that, I wasn't sure what was the point. The little things, I get it. I almost felt like the last episode wasn't needed. But wait, no, we have to make it all about Randall and Deja again.
Total overview, the show had its highs and lows. Season 5 was low.....last episode was meh.
Call the Midwife (2012)
I've lost that loving feeling
I was such a fan in the beginning. Story lines that shed light on post WWII London and it's poverty and need for healing. The characters were interesting. But as the new seasons have unfolded, the writers have failed to replicate the magic of the season before. I miss Chummy, Sister Evangelina, Tom and Barbara and even young Jenny. Running out of stories, perhaps? And now, their attempts to film under Covid-19 restrictions are resulting in lack of chemistry among cast members, underdeveloped stories, and an odd draggy pace to the dialogue. Has this series run it's course? Possibly. Maybe it's time for the final curtain.
Inventing Anna (2022)
First and last episodes, too far apart.
Two part drama at most. The whole circular "we're all guilty" argument, Anna is the real victim....beat to death like a horse into a can of Alpo. Did she really manipulate every single person in her presence so that none of them could think for themselves? I wanted to slap all of them. My guess is the real story was a lot less compelling.
The Hateful Eight (2015)
Typical Tarantino Crap
Oppressive and punishing. I begged to be excused 20 minutes in, and gradually everyone else stepped away until only one viewer remained. And he had nightmares all night after that. It's obvious Tarantino has a contest with himself to see how repulsive he can make his creations, and disguise them as entertaining.
Victoria (2016)
Meh
Didn't find it to be compelling or tempting. I thought Jenna Coleman was lacking in her attempts to make the young Victoria interesting. Expressionless. No thanks.
Bridgerton (2020)
Jane Austen meets Melrose Place
Stop trying to make Bridgerton happen. So cringeworthy and so technically amiss. You treat your viewing public like imbeciles when you attempt to make history relatable. Stick with facts and history....why do you think Downton Abbey was such a hit? The delight is in the details.
