Ripley's Game (2002)

not for me
16 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am a big fan of The Talented Mr Ripley with Matt Damon, mainly because of the way the story develops (despite the fact that Tom becomes a killer), but this film turned me off in the first five minutes with the unnecessary language and violent brutality. I am at a total loss as to why foul language has to be be incorporated into movies today. Some of the best films do not have to rely on gross language to be great. I find myself increasingly turned off by many of the modern films because of the way that language is incorporated into them as a matter of course. Surely I am not the only one who feels this way.

a different type of film

Despite the negative comments, I really liked this film. It wasn't a brilliant story but the acting and the scenery more than made up for this. I really liked the male actor even though I hadn't seen him before. Nice to see a movie these days that isn't MA15+........!!

walk out territory

My wife and I went to see this movie with no conception of what to expect. We walked out after 10 minutes when the foul language became over-powering. If this is a fore-runner of movies to come I don't want to see them.

Disappointingly unnecessary level of expletives

It's gotta be me, because nowhere else in the reviews did I even see this mentioned. I thought it was a reasonable movie given that I had never heard of this "scandal" before, but the thing that turned me off it completely was the level of language. I cannot for the life of me understand how movie writers, producers, directors, actors think that language of this nature can enhance a movie experience. As with most movies these days one has to tolerate a certain level of profanity otherwise all we would watch would be "G" rated movies and, as a result, miss some great movies which also contain some language, but certainly not to the extent of this one. I would be very reluctant to recommend this movie to a friend.

I like this movie above all others. It is "multi-layered"; there is so much to see and appreciate. Every viewing brings a new appreciation of the story-line, the plot and the characters. Faultlessly acted and extremely enjoyable if you take the time to watch it and appreciate it. I love the interaction between the players; the subtle relationships; the period atmosphere. Ralph Fiennes is perfectly cast as the brooding lover and Geoffrey the wronged husband is beautifully underplayed by Colin Firth. The scene in the sand storm where Catherine & El-masy are discussing the different types of sand storms is one of the high-lights of the film and where the affair really starts. The other relationship between Hanna & El-masy is yet another "layer" of the movie which is totally enchanting (and heart-rending). A worthy winner of so many awards.
