Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Stunning visuals but...
The only reason this gets a 6 is because the CGI is amazing and it is beautiful. The world building (like the first one), is the best part of the film. However there are several reasons why the film doesn't work for me in terms of plot:
1. It requires characters to be stupid 24/7
2. Same bad guy is lazy and felt unoriginal. Somehow in this amazing world it comes back to the same awful character from the first film.
3. They leave the forest because they don't want to endanger the na'vi...yet when the bad guys find them with the water tribe they seem ok to stay and fight and let others be put in harms way? It makes no sense.
4. The dialogue is painful at times.
5. The acting is not good. Sam Worthington still hasn't learnt to do an American accent in the decade plus since the first film.
6. It is at least 30-45 minutes too long.
Marriage Story (2019)
Beautiful
I have to start off by saying, whilst I am not the biggest fan of Baumbach's work, I am a massive fan of this movie. The movie simply follows a young married couple who live in New York as they go through the hardships of divorce.
Marriage Story has moments to make you laugh, to make you cry, to make you angry. You feel the emotions as the characters feel their emotions, all while never siding with either character. You feel like the child of a divorce being dragged from one side to the other, not knowing who to sympathise with and who your allegiance is drawn towards. This of course comes down to Baumbach's trademark realistic dialogue, and the performances of Adam Driver and Scarlett Johanson - they are both wonderfully superb! As a viewer you feel like a fly on the wall in the midst of family engagements and situations you feel like you shouldn't be watching as Baumbach manages to frame such an intimate setting.
Do not go into this movie expecting screaming and shouting, with temperatures constantly flaring - no this movie is not like that, in fact it delivers the same punches in a more subtle, quiet, moving manner. However, do go into this movie prepared for the best movie of 2019, as that is exactly what it is.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
Packs a Punch!
Boy, this movie is relentless! A thrill ride like no other in the Mission Impossible franchise, bouncing from one action set-piece to another in style. I came into this movie expecting what I had experienced during the last few MI movies- a good, fun action movie that is then forgotten about after a few weeks. However I think this one is different!
A compelling rivalry between Tom Cruise and Henry Cavill keeps you on the edge of your seat during a flurry of chase scenes and fight scenes. This is the best rivalry in this franchise since MI3 when Cruise was up against the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Ethan Hunt's team all return and are n fine form as always!
Be prepared for a long sit! At two and a half hours this is a very long movie, and frankly exhausting! Whilst it is good fun, it is too long and you can find yourself having viewers fatigue.
However do not let that keep you back from what is the best instalment from the MI franchise! This movie may have some flaws, but it is certainly the best action movie to come out in 2018.
