Adventures of Serial Buddies (2011)
Comedy from another world...
One thing that all my favorite movies have in common is that they take you to another world, sometimes in an obvious way, like with The Hobbit or Avatar, sometimes in a more subtle way, like with Rocky Horror Picture Show, Boogie Nights, or The Adventures of Serial Buddies. Some aspects of the strange new world might be dark or scary or sad, but the characters find a way to be themselves and shine in the middle of all the madness. The characters end up feeling like a family, like your family, and you know you're going to miss them when the closing credits roll. I saw this director's first film (In the Land of Merry Misfits) at the Tribeca Film Festival and I couldn't figure out why everyone wasn't talking about it. It was like a super-vivid, feverish dream. This second film is even better, more focused, more refined, with smoother acting and camera work, but with the same vivid eye and big heart. Accept these crazy characters on their own terms, and you are in for the ride of a lifetime.
