Live Free or Die Hard (2007)
When imagination goes beyond the reason...
...hte result should be a Sci-Fi movie. This movie is indeed action-packed, fast-paced, and could be entertaining if... only if you can take the action to some other world, where none of the laws of physics apply. While the previous three Die Hard were at the limit of credibility, this one does not even pretend to be credible. The result is that instead of having a movie which is entertaining due to the action, you get a movie entertaining by being ridiculous. I gave a 5 to this movie mostly because obviously there have been made a lot of efforts and invested a lot of money in its production. What really amazes me is that Bruce Willis did not have the guts - him, a Die Hard ! - to tell the producers 'Hey, M*****r F*****s, this is all a huge bull***t !'
The Lost Room (2006)
Good combination
The mini series are a clever combination of Stargate and Stalker, not being any of them. Like in Stalker, there are some unexplainable effects of the objects and there is no explanation on why they behave that way. Personally, I find this very good, leaving a mystery hanging, and not spoiling the fun by saying that "it was an alien experiment" or something like that. The part resembling Stargate is the possibility to travel from one place to another, provided there is a door in the place you want to go to. Stargate? If you had a gate somewhere you could go there instantly. There is a great opening for upcoming series - hopefully somebody will find it worthy to be continued. As I see it, it is worthy. I gave it a 9, not because it would not deserve a 10, but there has to be a goal all the time - go for the 10!
Alien Express (2005)
Really, you would think they learned how to do special effects.
I am a big fan of sci-fi movies. So, when I saw this movie in the EPG, I thought I was in for a pleasant evening. What a disappointment ! Such a poor display of "special" effects I could not imagine in 1980, but in 2005 ? Come on, why would you do special effects of an helicopter flying in the desert when you can film a real one for a much lower price (I guess) ? And those killer "muppets"... well, I could do better than that in a couple of hours in the garage. You can expect to have a low budget on a movie, but I don't think it's reasonable to have a low movie for any budget. As for the "star" of the movie (I use a lot of quotes tonight...), Lou Diamond Philips, the guy is not even remotely an actor. Maybe he should have stayed to the martial arts movies. All in all, an awful movie. Maybe I am in a bad mood tonight. Then again, maybe not. A sincere 1 out of 10.
Colosseum: Rome's Arena of Death (2003)
Not even a documentary...
I did not have high expectations on this movie, mostly because films following "The Gladiator" were facing a too big challenge, but this was worse than I expected. It is hard to define it as a movie, even harder to define it as a documentary, so I could call it (I admit, a little too cruel) a joke. Too bad for the efforts made to re-create the ancient Rome feeling, the commentary spoils everything. It is hard to understand who is making the comments, sometimes they come in the first person, sometimes in second, and several times they are referring to things that are totally out of the time of the Roman Empire - like the comment that the gladiators were sold as it happens to the football players, or the quotes from Suetonius. The fights are very short - the director could have used longer and better fighting scenes to make the movie a little more attractive, but failed to seize this opportunity. But this is not the main problem of the movie - it is what I was saying in the beginning, you don't know if it is a documentary or not. In my opinion, it is neither. If the director concentrated on the action, maybe it could have been a medium movie. I give this movie (?) a 2. That is only to offer some other movies the chance to be worse.
