Prima dammi un bacio (2003)
The Perfect Date Movie
In the summer of 2004, I worked at the Cannes Film Festival in France. While I was there, I had the chance to go see some of the best movies I saw in the year 2004, and out of all those movies, the best of the best was "Kiss Me First". It was so beautifully done, romantic, funny, with drama and humor perfectly blended together. I saw it with a friend of mine, and we both walked out of the theater in tears. Even now, ten months after I saw it, I still check my video store to see if it has been signed up for release in America, and if it ever is, there is no price I won't pay to add this movie to my collection. It is the PERFECT date movie!
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
Awww ...
While I admit that this may not be the height of Hindi cinema, I think this is a great Bollywood film. To date, it's the highest grossing Indian film ever, and in watching it, it's easy to see why. At moments, its corny-ness makes the Westernized viewer burst into laughter, and certain clichés - the shooting stars, for example - are so manufactured to the point of absurdity. But the writing is simple, humorous and good, and the chemistry between the two stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol is undeniable. And for every moment at which you laugh at the film, there are just as many moments of laughing with it as you watch Kahn and Kajol together as friends in school, separate as friends, and reunite again. It's simply a delightful movie, effortlessly funny and charming. A wonderful date movie.
