American Horror Story: The Body (2022)
I am. Just. Bored.
Maybe I have been bingeing on far too much of AHS during the last two months but I am getting really bored by it. This current season is number eleven and I really think that the franchise is running out of steam. I don't think that I can stomach much more mutilation.
I cannot work out whether it's the acting or the script but something's awry? Some of the plot lines seem a bit 'League of Gentlemenish' to me. There's no humour to balance the gore though.
The early days of Aids trope is probably the most interesting in my opinion. The setting, costumes and backgrounds are impressive though. Maybe S12 will be better, but as it's slated to star Kim Kardashian, I have my doubts.
The Full Monty: La Vie en Rose (2023)
Stupid, Irresponsible Writing
Quite apart from shoehorning every single form of social injustice and political commentary into every episode this particular chapter really takes the cake. Gaz telling a schizophrenic patient to cut down slowly on his antipsychotic medication just so that he, Gaz, can capitalise on the guy's artistic talent to 'become the next Banksy'. I think anyone can guess where that particular trope went? I'm just glad that the result wasn't a tragedy.
I don't think that having a co-writer in Alice 'Chumbawumba' Nutter has really elevated Simon Beaufoy's scripts in this frankly watchable but also deeply irritating reboot.
House of Sims (2023)
Charmless plastic bores
Why on earth the Sims family were deemed interesting enough for a spin off show, but clearly only OFTV thinks so? The Simses are deluded - they possess naff all talent but think that they'll succeed in the cut throat world of LA. Charlie has a sour look on his face most of the time, Chloe is more plastic than the Bride of Wildestein, Frankie is a work shy fool and as for Demi - she is just plain awful. The only one who seems to have her head screwed on is Georgia who isn't a bloodline Sims anyway.
I cannot fathom why a second series has been commissioned? Far better shows than this fall by the wayside.
In Suspicious Circumstances: Falling Starr/Good as Gold (1993)
Very Poor
The 'American' accents were absolutely diabolical, as was the rest of the acting during this half of the programme. I honestly forgot that it was supposed to be set over in the United States!? The plot is also rather confusing.
I am watching the re-runs on TPTV and do not remember them being *quite* that bad back in the early nineties? Oh well, it was great to be able to share the show with my spouse. He enjoys watching older shows on TV. I do think that Edward Woodward makes a fantastic storyteller though - his commanding presence and somber demeanour works incredibly well with this kind of format.
Catfish UK (2021)
Pretty Awful
In comparison to the US version this is shoddy. The hosts, be it Oobah, Julie or the frankly shouty over-emoting Nella aren't a patch on Nev and Kamie. It's poor.
In the Dark (2017)
In The Dark
I had already read both of Mark Billingham's source novels, but this strange TV adaptation didn't really hold together. MyAnna Buring was a strange casting choice as she played it like she was made of ice. Matt King was good as Dr Phil Hendricks though. The heavily pregnant angle was uncomfortable to watch.
Not sure why the London Met was swapped for Manchester though. Grittier I guess?
Meet the Richardsons (2020)
Meet The Richardsons
This mockumentary was reviewed on the amazing 'Comedy Slab' podcast, so I tuned into the freeview channel Dave to watch it. I have encountered Jon Richardson on various panel shows and fully admit that his whiny miserable act is really grating, but thought that this show may make fun of that in the style of say 'The Trip'. It didn't.
Including their no mark next door neighbours is a poor choice, ditto the repeated introduction. Lucy's voice is also irritating after a while.
Thorne: Sleepyhead (2010)
Thorne: Sleepyhead
After seeing the author speak at a literary festival I purchased a few of his novels from Audible then decided to listen to 'Thorne: Sleepyhead' and 'Thorne: Scaredycat' prior to purchasing the Blu-rays of the Sky1 dramatisation. David Morrissey was a great choice for the central role and the cast were very talented.
The plot, however was all over the shop.
