Collateral (2004)
Just not believable
Its just too far fetched to think that a professional killer would act in this manner & draw attention to himself in so many ways that he did. Quite ridiculous Club scene where Cruise walks in an takes out just about every bouncer in the club & also avoids capture by the FBI & Police squads who are already in position, just not feasible - never going to happen.
Tom Cruise just doesn't do sinister villain very well - can't take him seriously in this type of role.
Mark Ruffalo's character of suspicious detective is built up very nicely - gets you thinking that he will play a major role in the end but suddenly fizzles out when he is shot at the crazy club scene - not much sense in all of that..
Transcendence (2014)
A worthy watch
Not breaking entirely new ground - reminded me of the Skynet takeover of the earth in the Terminator movies. I can remember as a kid watching black & white television with just four channels - not even 50 yrs ago & look at where we are now. Therefore I thought the movie storyline quite plausible - although as to how Will Caster (Jonny Depp) would build such a huge enterprise with the worlds media descending on the town I don't know. This is where it lacks realism as even today such developments as GM crops are wholly scrutinised with so much control exercised by governments that intelligent computer systems capable of repairing human tissue would surely be under the microscope and regulated at every turn.
In my opinion the plot fell a little short in terms of the takeover and power the system should have had over areas of the planet - such as munition systems. As powerful as we are led to believe it is the system certainly would have taken greater steps to ensure it could not be attacked so easily by a small bunch of mercenaries.
Definitely enjoyable - would watch again sometime.
Jarhead 2: Field of Fire (2014)
Captivating movie
As one who has never served in the field of fire - I've always had the greatest respect for those who have. I don't think anyone can imagine the absolute horror when involved in close combat where blood is spilled and close comrades die. With Jarhead 2 I remained fully focused throughout. The plot is surely influenced by the events of the current time surrounding the real life story of Malala Yousafzai, shot by the Taliban for her outspoken thoughts on womens rights in Afghanistan.
I felt a real passion for the marine characters in the movie - dedicated to each other and their evolving mission.
One of the ending scenes between the marine & Afghan fighter fighting dying in a hail of bullets was somewhat reminiscent of Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
By enlarge a very enjoyable movie..
Gravity (2013)
Buffoons in outer space
My first attempt at watching this movie ended in failure, I didn't even reach halfway through before hitting the eject disc button. Several months later I decided to strap myself into the settee just to see if my previous assessment had been a bit harsh. Alas not one bit - I have to declare this is possibly on of the worst Space/Sci Fi movies ever made, I find it incredulous it has received such a high rating and Acadamy awards.
The Plot - just complete nonsense, from the start the audience are immersed with the two main characters scientist Dr.Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) & Astronaut Matt Kowolski (George Clooney). For some reason together with other crew they are on a space shuttle orbiting above the earth - mission never explained. Stone & Bullock are on a space walk with the latter just jetting around doing nothing apart from constantly joking as he talks with Stone. The chatter between the two is nonsensical - particularly as any mission of this type would be a a most serious professional affair.
Out of nowhere we have an explosion somewhere in space with debris heading their way - no urgency or suspense when suddenly the debris is upon them - total destruction ensues, the rest of the shuttle crew are killed but somehow Stone & Kowolski still outside the shuttle in their space suits remain unscathed.Totally ridiculous as any catastrophic event such as this would have ended in certain death for both. Stone's screaming and constant 'no no no no'ing ' just added to the unrealistic scenario - she is supposed to be a highly trained professional.
Kowolski then spots an unmanned Russian space station which they head for - just incredibly annoying is the pathetic joking banter from Kowolski to Stone - looking down at the earth his attention focused on how beautiful it is from such a precarious situation they are in !!
Managing to reach the Russian station Kowolski then cuts loose the umbilical cord he is connected to Stone with. Good riddance I though as he drifts off into the stratosphere somewhere - his silly joking attitude never to be heard of again.
Stone manages to open the exterior hatch and climbs inside the Russian ship and then devolves into some type of mind flip which has her chattering on about nonsense - absolutely nothing to do with piloting the ship with the scientific knowledge she is supposed to have. At one point she imagines Kowolski banging on the outer door of the ship then sitting back down beside her taking control - thank goodness this was just her imagination !!
So yet another disaster occurs with the Russian ship catching fire and disintegrating - by yet another miracle Stone escapes via an escape pod once again without a scratch. From here yet more nonsense when she spots an unmanned Chinese ship.Heading for this one she Jetisons from the pod with nothing but her suit and a Fire extinguisher as propulsion to reach the Chinese ship. I really have had enough by this time hoping that some monstrous Alien will swing by and gobble the whole thing up - the End!
But no - more incredulous happening as the Chines ship starts to break up on re-entry to Earth, astonishingly Stone escapes in the landing pod landing in a sea\lake somewhere - which signifies the end as she swims to shore to walk off into the distance
.
Absolutely shocking movie.
