Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story of INXS (2014)
Convincing actors, justified historical interpretation and well written script, worth watching again.
The brilliant display of talent, both of screenplay and writing was matched eloquently with the life of famous rock band INXS.
In particular, it was refreshing to see a balance between the stories of the other band members entwined with the history of Michael Hutchence. The story was well considerate of all aspects of the bands rise to fame, and perfectly incorporated them into an intricate web of unmissable scenes that give the film substance and fluidity.
In addition, Luke Arnold (as Michael Hutchence)was so convincing, it became difficult to separate him from the real thing. Samantha Jade (as Kylie Minogue) was another sensation to the cast, although not much in physical likeness to Kylie, her portrayal and vocal ability was remarkable. Jade was so professional in her portrayal that Kylie Minogue herself congratulated the young star (via Twitter) for her respectful depiction.
A fantastic production worth watching again. Part 2 should be well worth the wait. 9 out of 10 stars.
Pacific Rim (2013)
Sci-fi not worth watching in full or ever again!
This film had so much potential. Amazing movie posters, incredible nail biting trailers and a promising cast. So where did it all go wrong? A main storyline filled with plot holes, awkward screenplay filled with racial stereotypes and poorly directed scenes.
The acting had a non-intentional comical feel which greatly conflicted with the storyline and was very distracting. However not directly to the fault of the actors themselves, the uncomfortable cliché 'one-liners' and senseless scenes where everyone just screams and dies is resulted from poorly written scripts and directing. Also, the unsellable foreign aspects of the film is riddled with racial stereotypes and slanders. Such derogatory scenes even included a "Russian" woman wearing an eye-patch and grunting like a masculine commando, purely retched material.
To sum up, although it had lots of CGI eye candy, it was painful to watch. The main story is filled with holes and is lost to the action in the film. This could have been avoided if the side-story, 'about a girl', was expanded and adapted into the main story. In addition, the actors struggle to uphold the seriousness of the film due to distasteful scripts and directing. Also, the drama scenes dragged out too long and the anticipation of the cool robot on alien scenes did not compensate.
Best if fast-forwarding straight to action scenes, a sci-fi not worth watching in full or ever again. 2 out of 10 stars.
After Earth (2013)
Sophisticated sci-fi thriller worth watching, thats visually stunning with a realistic conception of a future!
This film encapsulates a sophisticated and realistic future. Unlike movies before it, After Earth features a new sound of linguistic and auditory feel. Something that the actors should be proud to have successfully mastered with a unique and unified new world accent.
In addition, the seamless CGI paints breathtaking landscapes that have you thinking about its passably realistic environments that have Avatar looking like a cheap cartoon.
Moreover, the acting coincides with the seriousness of the storyline and avoids that uncomfortable cliché 'one-liners' that set this film apart from your typical Disney movie or senseless sci-fi thriller where everyone just screams and dies. Also, child actors tend to be heavily supported by other adult actors sharing the bulk of scenes for them in films, whereas Jayden Smith supports himself in long scenes with ease and conviction.
To sum up, although it is unusual to see actors speak in an unfamiliar accent and a child actor in a lead role, it works well. The story plays a strong act as the backbone in the film and is not lost to the action. The actors conform their emotions perfectly to an unfamiliar future about survival. Also the landscapes, gizmo's and actor to CGI elements are all visually pleasing.
Sophisticated sci-fi thriller worth watching. 8 out of 10 stars.
