Interstellar (2014)
Nolan Has Once Again Out Done Himself With This Wonderful Masterpiece
I haven't even taken off my coat, what I am saying now is fresh of my mind. I HAVE TRULY NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING QUITE LIKE THIS FILM. Sure, it takes influence from 2001: A Space Odyssey and it has a similar mind bending theme to some of Nolan's previous films like Inception but it really stands itself apart. The writing which at times can go of at a tangent is still superb, a lot of the film is fuelled with scientific theories which may work for some people or may not. If you can get past that crossing reality barrier then you can really see what is great about Interstellar. None the less Nolan doesn't disappoint which came as no surprise, you can really see how hard Nolan has worked to make this great, the mass amount of research he did was clearly worth it. The story for the most side works, I know that a lot of people are going say that its momentum dropped two thirds of the way and I can see why they would think that but like I said if you can get past the wild scientific theories you will enjoy this a lot more. The direction was perfect as always with Nolan, he uses his same vibe and once again it doesn't go wrong. This film is visually impressing but that may not come as a wow factor some people after recently seeing space films such as "Gravity" but trust me there are many moment sin this film that are worth seeing especially on the big screen. The performances were outstanding especially Matthew McConaughey who once again deserves an award for this performance, If there was any point in this film where I would lose hope, Matthews performance would bring straight back him, he really delivers powerful performance just like he did in true detective. Obviously Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon and Michal Caine are worth a mention, they performed well but the film was primarily based on Matthews's character throughout so some people may not appreciate the other performances because of his being so amazing. The music and sounds were also very good thanks to Hans Zimmer once again, you can see they take a lot form space odyssey but with their own unique sound. I don't want to say too much because I'm afraid I will ruin this and this is not a film that should be ruined for people. Christopher Nolan has once again outdone himself which I dint think he could do again; he has never made a bad film. If you expected a good film, it's not what you are getting; it's a truly impressive masterpiece.
The Leftovers: The Prodigal Son Returns (2014)
A Light At The End Of The Tunnle!
WOW, that was an eventful episode. The way they ended the first series of the leftovers was interesting because we were given a glimpse of hope for the first time on this show. I was very skeptical about this series because i thought all the episodes would be similar but i was wrong and as of now i feel that this show is safe for at least another season or two. Hopefully its not dragged on like lost. As far as finale's go this was pretty memorable to be honest, it was directed wonderfully. We were made to think a couple of times that all was lost for our protagonist but no! The whole mapleton on fire scene was intense and it raised the bars for what the GR are capable of. The scene with Wayne and Kevin is worth noting because it was very interesting to watch, especially when Kevin was asked to make a wish which was "granted" by Wayne. Even though we don't know what the wish was, we can have an idea that it was about him having his family back. Without saying to much i recommend watching this because it was a perfectly done finale for a well-done series.
Fargo: The Rooster Prince (2014)
"You need to see what's good in the world because if you don't how you gonna live"
The second episode of this series (The Rooster Prince) gives you more of what you loved about the first episode and that's great. I only have good points on this episode, no cons at all. The series has really hit a home run with its first two episodes, i hope it continues like this. I few things i love about the series which shine a lot in this episode is the black comedy which comes from the great writing. One of my funniest parts in this episode is when Dmitri (Stavros Milos son) comes bursting into the room and tells the karate joke. I like a series that can balance drama, comedy and action. A strong factor about this episode was the small stories that were told by a few of the characters, they really pull you in and make you enjoy every scene. Also it gives you a strong feel for the characters. Once again the performances continue to impress me, new characters get introduced in this episode and it works. It may feel like too many characters are being forced into the show at once but i like that about it. Everyone has their own story to tell.
I really did enjoy the first two episodes and i hope it gets even better. I recommend watching this even if you thought first one was a bit slow, this is faster paced. Thank you for reading, if you have any enquiries feel free to email me.
Hannibal: Kaiseki (2014)
'Hannibal' Returns and thats a damn good thing!
Without spoiling anything... This was a great episode, the amazing writing and acting has continued making me excited to watch the remaining 12 episodes of Hannibal. The thing that a love about this series is that is makes me want to watch the next episode very badly which is rare for me as 'Breaking Bad' has finished. The pacing is very good, it is becoming to be one of the best TV shows. I was worried about the start of this series because Will's situation, i didn't know where they would take it and i still don 't but I'm not worried. I'm intrigued. This episode 'Kaiseki' was more eerie than usual for this series, i like it, i like the horror essence of the show and they should show it more. I cannot really write much more as its spoiler free but i encourage you to watch this episode or if you haven't watched Hannibal yet, watch it!
Captain Phillips (2013)
This is the way the story of Richard Phillips should be experienced!
This movie shows us the true story of Richard Phillips who was Captain of an American cargo ship, Phillips experienced being hijacked by Somali pirates back in 2009. This is a great story to build a film on and that is exactly what Billy Ray does. I have seen this movie three times now and I must say it is a masterpiece, the storytelling and acting is superb! Captain Philips is played by Tom Hanks who has once again surprised me with his amazing acting; this definitely is one of his best films. He portrays the role so well, it all feels real. I was literally on the edge of my seat in a cinema, it's that intense. Paul Greengrass has once again delivered a spectacular film.
One of the things I loved most about this movie is how it shows us both sides of the story to a degree where you can understand why the Somali pirates hijacked the ship but still you are rooting for Captain Phillips and his crew to win. The head of the Somali pirates Abduwali muse (Barkhad Adbi) plays a very convincing pirate with his aim to hijack a ship so he can make 'millions', he chooses Captain Phillips ship because the route his ship is taking is away from the other cargo ships unfortunately. Captain Phillips already believes that the route they are taking through the Somali basin is dangerous so he takes extra precautions which are unfortunately not enough.
Once again I must praise Tom Hanks for his acting, he acts like his life depends on it. He digs deep into a character showing great emotion. I can see this as being an Oscar winning performance. Now Barkhad Adbi who plays the role of Muse, I wasn't sure on him at first but he blew me away, he played the role amazing with his snarky name for Captain Phillips 'Irish'. This film can be heart-wrenching to watch at times, it's hard to watch Captain Phillips struggle through the decisions and obstacles that he faces. This film is not an action flick where Tom Hanks fights all the pirates and becomes the hero, he agrees to the terms of the pirates but makes it as hard as he can for the pirates without making it obvious. He is the hero in this movie, he does save his crew but not in the way you would expect. Phillips makes it so hard for Muse that soon he is only limited to a few options, now Muse is not dumb, he's actually quite intelligent but so is Phillips which makes this film entertaining to watch as they battle it out through wits.
The story of Richard Phillips is very interesting and Phillips actions were truly amazing and this film shows that in the best way possible, I have no complaints about it. If you're not interested in story see this movie anyway because of Tom Hanks, he steals the show with his great acting of the heroic man who is Captain Phillips. Paul Greengrass delivers an emotionally, tense and story driven movie that deserves to be rewarded with the highest honours. It sets the bar high for story riveting film making.
