Red Dust (1932)
Harlow and Gable.... MGM's Best Pairing Yet!
My second Gable film that I ever saw, I was flabbergasted by how racy this film was. Doesn't it make it even more lovable? Clark Gable stars as Dennis "Denny" Carson, who happens to be in charge of a rubber plantation in Indonesia. One of his partners returns on a boat with lovable Vantine (played by the ravishing Jean Harlow) and things merely heat up from there. Metro made a fantastic pairing of young Gable and very-blonde Harlow, for she knew how to beat him at his own game. This movie is very famous in its own right: Paul Bern, Harlow's then husband, committed suicide during filming and it made the most money in 1932, a million dollars. Not bad for the Depression. A great film, so make sure to watch for it on Turner Classic Movies!
Gable and Lombard (1976)
What a Shame To Watch...
I just saw this film today and as an avid Gable worshipper, I was shocked that people even attempted to capture Gable and Lombard's chemistry on film. Even though James Brolin (who played Clark) was I suppose alright acting-wise, he was not the best. Jill Clayurgh (who played Carole) didn't even look like Lombard, but I also suppose she did mediocre acting-wise. Its hard, at least for me, to watch a film where actors and actresses are trying to play someone who's passed away and don't even look like them! I know the love story between Clark and Carole like the back of my hand, I KNOW it. I wish Sidney J. Furie, the director, should of done more background information about both Hollywood legends before trying to make a film about them. I mean, I know the film focused on their love, but still if you don't have the right information to play in front of the camera, other fans will dislike it. I wouldn't watch this movie again, but I suppose if you have a free afternoon, its not worth watching. for God's sakes, just pop in Gone with the Wind!
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Spectacular! Spectacular!
I saw this movie over a year ago, and this is one of the best films I have ever seen! If you haven't seen it, I certainly suggest going out to your nearest store and purchasing it!!! Baz Luhrmann's masterpiece, featuring the lovely Nicole Kidman as a nightclub diva and Ewan McGregor as a penniless writer is one of the greatest love stories of the 20th century.
The dancing, the singing... Nicole did an excellent job, and Ewan's voice just blew me away!!! I still sing the songs and listen to the soundtracks I have, and it is just something you either love and or hate. I have never seen such a wonderful picture, what else could I say? Even though some of it may not seem unrealistic (at times), who doesn't want a man singing to them like how Ewan does to Nicole? Besides that, they were in love, and who doesn't love a love story? I think Baz Luhrmann is an absolete genius and he is considered God in my eyes. He took the dive, along with everyone else involved in this project, and it was certainly worth the plunge.
I am always using the famous quotes from the film, but mostly just this one... "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love... and be loved in return."
