Die (2010)
Nice, simple thriller!
I don't know what previous reviewers were thinking but they obviously didn't see the same film I did. I guess some folks just like over the top slasher porn and others have a different idea of what's entertaining.
I don't like gruesomely over the top and poorly acted horror porn. In fact, I think those kinds of films are garbage. But, to each his or her own.
This film was great. Well crafted screenplay, intriguing story, the opening scene was a nice insight into Jacob Odd's motivation and so long as you pay attention, which isn't difficult with this film, you would make the connection right away between that scene and the rest of the film.
This film is great, simple storyline, uncomplicated as a thriller should be. You don't really question what, who, or where, but you do have to figure out the why and the how.
I liked this film for it's simplicity. One of the best thrillers I've seen. Glad I bought the DVD, and not just because I'm a fan of one of the actors.
District 9 (2009)
District 9 is a 10
My excitement about this film was tantamount to a Jonas brother's concert and I was not disappointed. It was exciting, engaging, empathetic and enigmatic.
I was glued to my seat the whole time. The CGI was flawless and I couldn't tell the aliens weren't ACTUAL alien actors. The humans were vibrant and the acting was so real as to evoke true emotion, not the fake Hallmark card type of acting at all.
The direction of this supremely well written script was without reproof and it is obvious that the director truly understands his subject matter without turning it maudlin and false.
My one warning would be if you are squeamish, consider yourself prepared. The gore factor is extremely high, though all within the context of the film. Just so you know, there is vomiting, eating of cat food, blood, guts, exploding bodies and body parts, vivisection, graphic violence and none of it is isolated. The gory bits go on and on and on and on....and on. That is not to say there are ONLY gory parts. Think STARSHIP TROOPERS and you have the right amount of gore factor.
The characters are portrayed so realistically, even the aliens, that you truly believe these people exist, which is the point of any good actors job.
See this movie if it's the last thing you do. You won't regret it.
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Was This Supposed To Be A Comedy?
I did actually like this film but I couldn't help but laugh throughout the last forty minutes. There were so many bad clichés and cheesy lines and some just outright silliness that I couldn't help myself.
First of all, Kelsey Grammar, though I do love the man, was so bizarre as the Beast (is he a monkey, a lion, a bear, what is he?) and with so little explanation about him I just wanted to laugh at him.
Secondly, there was no groundwork for the fact that Jean Grey has a dual personality. We saw Xavier and Magneto go to her house but there was no indication that she was suffering. Her parents looked long suffering but she seemed fine. So I had no clue about the whole dual personality thing and it came as surprise, and one that made me laugh. It just wasn't handled well enough.
Thirdly, the mutant with the wings. Okay, he just looked like a giant seagull to me. It was so poorly done and I expect better from a film that spends millions on FX. Come on guys, you can do better and should, or you are just ripping the public off.
Fourth, too many new characters with little or no explanation on who or what they are.
And yet, despite all these problems, I loved this film. I especially like the bit at the end after the credits.
Xavier lives people and I for one am very glad. Xavier is my favourite character.
So, see this film but be prepared to laugh at the cheesy bits.
The Break-Up (2006)
Chick Doesn't Like Flick
This movie was a disaster, which is terribly unfortunate for everyone involved.
The only performance that was believable was Jennifer Aniston's and that was because she was channeling her actual real life break up with Mr. Bragalina Pitt-Jolie! Her performance was almost creepily real and sadly pathetic in most places because obviously she was venting her feelings from such a difficult time in her life.
The rest of the actors were obviously confused as to what kind of movie they were in. Vince Vaugh, though I love the dear big lovable goofball, didn't mesh with his co star despite their supposed off screen romance. There was zero, and I mean zero, chemistry.
The rest of the cast were wasted in this film. Vaughn's best bud, Jon Favreau had so little to do that it was an insult, same goes for Jason Bateman. The characters gave conflicting advice from one scene to the next and the whole thing seemed so pointless.
What a shambles. Vaughn should let the real writers do the writing and just do the acting, because there is no shame in being a great actor in many genre's.
In comparison to the film that Aniston's ex made with his new lady love, the Pitt/Jolie on screen chemistry was like fire! Someone should have stopped this disaster movie before it hurts us all.
Household Saints (1993)
Miraculous!
It's a miracle when a small film gets made and it's not some self-absorbed piece of trash nor too artsy to have a broader appeal. This film walks the fine line between banality and boring.
Even if you aren't religious, you can get something out of this film. It really speaks to the power of faith and love, as well as the dangers of desire both expressed and repressed. It speaks of the depth of despair and how each of us deals with it. I am inclined to read the book from which it was derived.
Every performance is delightful and as a Vincent D'Onofrio fan it was a joy to see him in a "normal" character for a change. I did find it amusing that he played Lily Taylor's father in this film and few years earlier played her boyfriend.
I just want to say that the honeymoon scene is well worth it for any fan girrrrls of D'Onofrio, which I am a rabid one. He looks great and plays the horny gentle butcher to perfection, as he does every part he plays.
Watch this film even if you aren't a fan of some of the actors.
