No Country for Old Men (2007)
Dreary, vile, spawned from twisted minds
Really. I'm not sure how anyone could like this movie.
The one character we sort of liked (the protagonist) gets offed in a strange scene near the end and we don't even get to see it happen, nor are we really sure it happened. Leaves you saying 'Huh?' No showdown at the OK Coral?
The plot had huge holes in it. I'm reasonably sure if I stumbled upon 2 million dollars I could:
1) disappear better than this guy did 2) figure out it was a bad idea to go back to the place where you stumbled upon the 2 million dollars in the middle of the night, given you know it was a drug deal gone bad and you sorta are the one who took the 2 million dollars. Hey. Whatever makes the plot work right? 3)And hey, if I'm going back to the drug deal gone bad location, I'm not going to take the machine gun I stole with me just in case some bad guys showed up, like they in fact did. I'll just be happy with my little .38!
And the bad guy. OK. So there's bad guys and then there's complete psycho's who have little purpose in the movie other than to kill everyone in their path. Makes you wonder what kind of movie these guys (Coen an Coen) were trying to make - a psycho slasher? End of our civilization?
Who knows.
Can I give this a negative rating?
Gwoemul (2006)
OK. Not great
Well, it's a monster movie so the monster is pretty important to do well. They didn't.
It looked like a typical scifi channel cgi special creation. And I never like monsters that have that "tremors" type, indiscriminate mouth thing going on.
I do agree with the other reviews that the characters are very well developed and very likable, real.
It really is too bad that the monster was ridiculous.
One point though, this movie has a distinct "America is horrible" theme. There were four important negative elements in this movie, all created by Americans or America's government. The Koreans were innocent victims of this abuse.
That sort of slipshod blatant racism is offensive, and detracts from what is an otherwise decent film.
So I like the movie but can only give it a five because of the terrible monster and racial overtones.
Unlike the truly pathetic American Godzilla production starring Matthew Broderick (one of the worst movies ever), you can still like this movie, despite the dumb creature and unnecessary racism.
Melancholia (2011)
Awkward
Really, this movie is painfully difficult to watch. I'm sure they could have gone out of their way to make the interactions between the characters more awkward but it would be hard.
Make sure you take lots of prozac or at least hide the weapons before watching this movie. It is so depressing pretty much from the very strange opening scene.
Kirsten Dunst is one of my favorite actresses but her abilities are totally wasted.
Southerland does his usual great job as the father in law but again, his character is 100% unlikable.
In fact, I didn't like any of the characters. If that was the writer's/director's wish, they succeeded.

Could have been great
Watched 21 minutes of this 71 minute flick. All I could handle. Really wanted to like it but here's the problems: a) So far the mom has just cried or been on verge of tears in every scene. Really? In front of dinner guests at a "party"? Man that'd be fun! Oh and way to take out your failed writing career on your 8 year old daughter.
b) Didn't take Hollywood long to ruin the entire movie by adding sexual deviancy to the mix. Really? An 8 year old boy playing the Queen of hearts. Director is clearly a pedophile. Let's just groom them young. Congrats pervert.
Do not let your children watch this movie for any reason, unless of course you want them to be homosexual.
