Elvis (2022)
My film of the year!
Just seen Elvis tonight. Been an Elvis fan all my life. I have seen a few interpretations of The King including a fair share of tribute artists. This is by far the best. Superb performance by Austin Butler and supported by and excellent cast. Oscar worthy methinks considering Rami Malek got one for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury.
Cape Fear (1962)
One of my top 10 films
Masterful suspense from J. Lee Thompson. On par with Hitchcock. Wonderful cinematography, especially the bayou scenes in the latter half of the movie. Tension building and atmospheric score by the master Bernard Hermann.( no wonder it was re used in the remake) Superior film to said remake to the remake mainly because of it hasn't the typical Hollywood ending. Nothing flashy. He's going back to prison and you see that is not what he wants. A career best by Mitchum
.
No Time to Die (2021)
Not a good send off.
Giving it 5. Would of been more for the sake of a couple of factors. Very weak villain. Rami Malek was underused and underwritten. I could hardly make out the mumbling. Set pieces were okay but not spectacular. And most importantly....so it was Craig's last Bond film. You don't kill the character off.! Just how do explain 'James Bond Will Return'? It isn't his character. It's Ian Fleming 's. Plus points went to the strong female characters. Wasted opportunity. Even Roger Moore was better. Plot was too similar to OHMSS. Even the music!!!
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
At last Justice for the League!
A far superior film to Joss Whedon's clumsy effort. Has heart and a better handling of the characters. Cyborg and Flash for example. Sets up the subsequent DCEU films better. Great to see Darkseid at last and J'onn J'onnz aka Martian Manhunter. Can't wait for the blu-ray!!
Night of the Demon (1957)
One of my favourite horror films!
Every time I see this film it still gives me the eeby jeebies. Very atmospheric and eerie. Superb performances especially Niall MacGinnis . Very underrated character actor who excelled in villains. Great story . Great direction from a master Jacques Tourneur. In my top 10 horror movies of all time. Modern horror films could take a lesson from this.
Line of Duty (2019)
Dreadful.
Total poo! Avoid this film.bad acting ,script, direction, poor characters and waste of a cast and my time.
The Midnight Meat Train (2008)
Avoid!!!
Started out as a humdrum serial killer flick then descended into utter crap! Poor fx. Badly lit . No character development. And a piss poor explanation at the end. That was awful. Please avoid. It's a 2 hours I won't get back. If I could I would give it no stars.
Dracula (2020)
Will somebody please make a faithful adaptation!
Utter garbage!! This was was worse than the adaptation the Beeb was involved with about 10 years ago with David Suchet. The 1977 version with Louis Jourdan is the closest anyone has come to making this classic true to the book, including the Coppola version.
Knives Out (2019)
For those who love those all-star Agatha Christie films of the 70's
Just been to see an advanced showing of Knives Out. Great whodunit in the flavour of Agatha Christie. All the cast were great especially Daniel Craig . Could there be another with the same character. I hope so. Lots of fun. One of my films of the year. And could be a contender for an Oscar nod for the wonderful screenplay. As for the nay sayers because of the last Star Wars film .......get over it. Even Lucas got it wrong with 2 out of the 3 prequels!!!!
Ad Astra (2019)
Pitt is excellent!
Just been to Ad Astra. Not disappointed in a great acting performance from Brad Pitt. A tale of inner turmoil and a man facing and overcoming his inner demons, and coming out of the shadow of his father. Beautiful cinematography and visual effects. Only let downs are Tommy Lee Jones and Liv Tyler were a little underused . Also while the pacing is a probably a little slow for some audiences the battle on the moon felt shoehorned in so to ramp up the action and satisfy the blockbuster crowd for 5 minutes. Other than that highly recommended Ad Astra and Mr. Pitt
Justice League: War (2014)
Utter rubbish.
Gave it 1 star and that's being generous. Turned it off after 20 minutes. One of the main reasons I gave up reading DC comics was because of trash like this. Total disregard of what has gone before. Lack of characterization. The protagonists acting out of character. Dreadful story. No build up. DC needs a shake up. Especially for when Marvel know what it takes to get their movies right. They care for their characters. Didio ,John's and Lee have got to hang their heads in shame.
Brightburn (2019)
So so.
Just been to see Brightburn. Got to say a bit average. Okay special effects. Lot of gore but sadly lacking in characterization. Became formulaic and a bit predictable. I can see the comparison with a certain Man of Steel but I think the Elseworlds series have done different takes on the Superman mythos far better. Wait for it to come on TV.
Frankie and Johnny (1966)
Better than some.
My first review on IMDB and it's an Elvis film! Seen them all and although he had done better films ie King Creole,Wild In The Country and Flaming Star to name a few, this isn't that bad. I thought some of the one liners extremely funny. Lack of sexual chemistry or any chemistry between Elvis and Donna Douglas but Elvis worked very well with M.A.S.H. veteran Harry Morgan. Most of the songs are forgettable but considering it's set in the late 1800's it's not supposed to be Rock and Roll. Good example of Tom Parker's mismanagement of Elvis during the 60's. Worse that year was Harum Scarum.......shudder!
