Saltburn (2023)
Oh dear...what just happened
Others have taken time to write detailed critical reviews.....I thus see little value in me typing an essay.
At the time of typing, (Jan 2024) most chat I have seen or heard re the movie has been about controversial scenes rather than plot,, characters or storyline.
Not a masterpiece psychological thriller/drama....for me.
For those wanting stimulation or to be shocked I suggest using a suitable streaming service or watching some true life crime documentaries.
Crucially I was not fussed about any of the characters or what happened to them.
I kept pausing to see how long was left.
The final twist revelations cynically vague.
Sorry fans.
Payback (2023)
Give ìt a go....better than expected
Watched 3 of 6 episodes from streaming on ITVX. Stong performances from near all leading cast members.
Plenty of twists & turns. Characters have enough depth to enable the viewer to care about what happenss.
I like a decent Crime Drama but dislike those which are weak.. Only half way through my binge viewiing..... So far this has been compelling enough to keep me wanting more.
A few layers to this. Not high octane so far but has pace & the storyline has kept me engaged.
Fans of crime dramas can be quite demanding .....myself included.
I am mindful I have not given anything away (no spoilers). Better than many household name crime dramas I have seen.
Give it a go !
2012 (2009)
Underrated by many.....never understood why.
Depth of characters. Lots going on. Good CGI. Original story line. Decent enough acting from strong cast. Entertaining. focus on relationships and often linked characters. Banter and humorous one liners. Good camera work. Decent atmospheric music score. Better than Independence day & The Day After Tomorrow (which remain solid and good movies). Like many others who have posted positive reviews I cant comprehend why so much dislike for this. I watch and like a lot of movies (not just Hollywood Blockbusters)..Alternative endings & cut scenes on the DVD copy I have are worth checking out...My favorite end of world/disaster movie .
Rim of the World (2019)
Genuinely enjoyable budget scifi
I found this on Netflix UK. I was expecting a tame movie aimed at a young child audience...BUT I was pleasantly surprised.
Rated 15 !
In the main...Good solid acting from the young teen main 4 characters. Time was taken to show their individual characters and how they developed.. Wizard of Oz comes to mind in terms of slightly clichéd personality traits BUT it works.
Sure there are scifi movies with better SFX but I enjoyed it more than MiB 3.
The movie takes time at beginning to set the initial scene & introduce the characters....but before long you are into the action.
Sure its not breathtaking all the way but once the pace picks up it remains steady until the climatic end.
Dont expect Super 8 or independence day.
An easy to watch scifi movie with some funny moments from lead characters I felt somewhat invested in.
I have seen far worse. I rated at 8 because I can't pick 7.5
Well done to the lead cast & film makers
Bright (2017)
Ignore the Netflix haters
I really enjoyed this movie. Initially I thought it was bad boys meets alien nation....however, there is more to this movie than that. Acting was solid. Dystopian backdrop worked well.
I am not reviewing this as a biased Will Smith Fan...(some of his other starrres in movies are as not as good as this)....I am also not reviewing this as a biased Netflix movie fan (I have seen some not so good Netflix original movies).
Buddy copy movie with a scifi fantasy theme. This movie has action, has decent special effects BUT doesn't need to rely on them.
I happened to come across this in Netflix listings having never heard if it before.
Hollywood arguably not keen on supporting acceptable quality Netflix Original
The movie doesn't spoon feed much info re the alternative settings & groups of people BUT it is easy enough to understand.
Surprisingly graphic in places but nothing horrendous compared to many action movies.
Watchable solid enough movie with plenty going on.
The Invitation (2015)
A waste of time...(very light spoilers only).
An invitation too far... With some years behind me I am a fairly open minded movie fan. Often happy to deviate from so called blockbusters I trawl the internet looking for recommendations. Sadly, for me, this was not a hidden gem.
Kicking off the movie opens with a slightly disturbing scene..I wouldn't have minded if it later had some relevance of weight.....I didn't find it.
I initially felt a light sense of intrigue BUT what ensued was a drawn out process...perhaps intended to build suspense or add depth to characters BUT I didn't feel the film did either.
A drawn out painful excursion with me having little concern for the fate of those vulnerable to the sharp end.
Sub plots lacked emotional depth or obvious relevance to the main plot.
Final minute of film indicated the viewer should perhaps have been left even more intrigued. I was not that viewer !
Some acceptable acting - Logan Marshall convinced me he felt (understandably) paranoid. No wonder he wanted to leave.
I pressed the pause button several times to see whether it was worth viewing until the end.........I only do this with a minority of films.
100 mins of my life that I would have rather watched trash TV .....( I don't like trash TV ! ) .
Some who liked this ma have greater depth & understanding of films than me.....On this outing I am happy if some may regard me as an ignorant philistine.
I seldom extend a hand gesticulation to a TV screen, however. the disappointed moron within me made me do so as end credits rolled.
