All the Light We Cannot See (2023)
Weak finish
I have not read the book, so I'm commenting solely on the series as a stand alone piece of entertainment.
The first 2 parts held my interest, but somewhere during the 3rd part it started to drag, and by the 4th I found myself searching Google for MLBs opening day in 2024 (march 28th BTW) until the very end when things got loud!
I would've given this an easy 5 maybe a 6 if it weren't for Ruffalos terrible accent and meh delivery. Maybe it's just me but it always feels like Ruffalo is noticeably trying to act (watch Shutter Island and compare him to Dicaprio, you'll see what I mean) the performance of the blind girl playing Marie was a plus and the guy playing Werner was solid, and the portrayal of the guy hunting Marie was also solid...
other than that...
Highly forgettable.
The Batman (2022)
Great Movie... I think it woulda been better if...
The movie was a success. I really enjoyed the aesthetic and the overall tone of the movie... But... With all superhero movies, it comes down to the villain, and frankly Paul Dano does not get enough screen time to feel like a true menace. I understand that this movie was portraying multiple villains, but Dano is a great actor (just watch There Will be Blood) and he should have had more time to put his stamp on the Riddler. That's my only real gripe... Definitely worth seeing!
Shigatsu wa kimi no uso (2014)
It's good... Just not my style...
There's nothing really bad about this series, it's just not my favorite flavor of anime. My one major drawback is that these are supposed to be middle-school kids but they act more mature than some 50 year olds do with regards to relationships. It doesn't significantly impact the show, but at times I would like find myself thinking, come on this is the exact opposite of how a pre teen kid would handle themselves. Overall it was a good series... Great art, great story... I'm just more of an action anime fan, but this was a decent palate cleanse in between series.
Hagane no renkinjutsushi (2009)
Honestly
I know it's a super normie thing to say, but this is the best anime series. It's so good that even ppl who aren't into anime (like my wife) enjoy it a lot!
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
It's entertaining, but...
Honestly... Time travel. It just feels lazy, and it leaves a lot of holes and questions. I'm not like a die hard mcu fan, but I've seen almost all of the movies leading up to this one (I think antman and wasp and captain marvel are the only ones I skipped) and I felt like this was mostly a letdown, but if I had been anticipating this movie as much as I know millions of people have been, I probably would have felt almost insulted.
They spend way too much time setting up the counter attack, and then the big plan is... Wait for it... We'll just go back in time and stop it before it starts! Not exactly original, or even creative... As I said before, it seems really lazy. Not to mention the myriad of questions your left with due to the paradox of time travel... For instance... If they retrieve all the stones before Thanos gets them, then how is everyone still missing when they get back to the present? If Thanos never gets the stones, then there's no snap, therefore no one is missing, vision never dies etc... It's just lazy writing for a fan base that has handed billions of dollars to Marvel for these movies.
What did I like? Not that anyone cares, but I am a Captain America fan... So the scene with Cap wielding Mjolnir was awesome! In fact that whole scene with Thanos vs. Cap, Thor, and Stark was by far the best scene in the entire mcu catalog IMO. I could have watched that for a lot longer.
Beyond that... Thor as a bum was silly, but also funny. Stark was incredible. The Hulk was underwhelming. Hawkeye and widow were okay.
I know a lot of other people were upset about the lack of screen time for all the other characters, but I'll forgive this point, because it is an AVENGERS movie... And the original 6 avengers were the being highlighted, which is completely understandable. Although ant man, rocket, Warhammer, and nebula also had significant roles, but again... I didn't really mind the attention paid to the core 6 players. (then again, I am a Cap fan, so maybe that had something to do with it).
Also, why even have a Captain Marvel movie release right before endgame, then introduce her in the movie, just to have her absent for 95% of the movie?
And how was Thanos so strong without the stones? Seems to me he almost didn't even need them with the way he was destroying everyone without them. Thor nearly kills him with the stones, but in this movie Thanos can pound Thor with Mjolnir and stormbreaker, plus Cap and Iron man... Cmon... It's little things like that, that are just annoying.
Overall it was meh, with one outstanding scene.
