The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
In a world of sequels we don't need, did we need another Purge so quick?
This was the question I asked myself when I sat down to watch this movie. I have to admit that when I planned to watch this I felt like the first one had just been released, and it was just too early for another one. As with anyone who plans on reviewing a movie after the credits roll I tried to tell myself I had no preconceived expectations before I sat down, but let's be honest, we always do. My idea going into this was that it was just to early, and we really don't need to see sequel after sequel to tell the same story over again. Being wrong sometimes can be a blessing. Since Scream, where the unspoken rule of sequels suck except in a trilogy became a spoken rule, sequels have fallen under even more scrutiny than before. When you watch a sequel, you don't want to see the same story, but in a different setting, (Horror movies go to space anyone?), we want to see more along the lines of what happens next? The Purge Anarchy found a way to make you think you are just seeing the same story in a more urban setting at the beginning of the film, to slowly molding the story continuation around this setting. To me anyway, this is what really helped the movie be a step above the traditional sequel. I felt like it knew where it was going and was completely comfortable in the fact that "all will be revealed," so far in fact that it become OK to do some of the same things over again. I was a huge fan of the first one, and I was very sure in the fact that Rhys Wakefield, who played the "Polite Leader," made the film and a crazy premise like this believable. The characters in the this one are absolutely not as memorable as those in the first film, a curse which I feel has followed Kiele Sanchez around since her days (day) on Lost.We don't watch a movie like this to love characters though right? After all who is famous in the Friday the 13th films? The counselors or the kids? Exactly. This film is definitely the next step in the fictional world of The Purge, and a great extension of the way many of us view life as it is today. Controlled and ruled by the rich. All in all the film is worth a watch or even two if you are one who likes films that make subtle connections, and/or surprise/twist endings. While the characters are only given the bare bones to work with as far as who they are, the film manages to make you care just enough about them to really want the good guys to win. The female leads are both very well done by the actresses and alongside Frank Gillo create the only real character growth or development throughout the film.
Verdict: Watch it. Very Enjoyable.
The Nut Job (2014)
A boring animated film made at the wrong time
At a time when amazing animated films like "Frozen" are released, a film like "The Nut Job" is barely able to hold your attention for the 85 minutes it runs. (Holy crap it was only 85 minutes?)
I will admit that while the opening credits were running I probably got my expectations a little high, with an honestly stellar voicing cast. The jokes had all been done time and time again. You will find maybe one or two laugh out loud jokes, but if you are anything like me, you will literally be looking at the clock longer than laughing.
The only saving grace for me was Liam Neeson as Racoon. It is hard not to laugh when the various hijinks surrounding his character occur and you think about him using his "certain set of skills." I wanted the movie to have more laughing moments than it did, and as I waited and waited nothing of substance happened. My children watched the movie and said they liked the movie, however, they never once laughed out loud.

The Little Rascals Save the Day (2014)
Did we really need another Little Rascals movie?
LIttle Rascals have been around longer than I have been alive. They made people laugh and go awww at the same time back then and in the 90s when the first movie was released.
First, let me just say that over all the kids that played the Little Rascals was damn near perfect casting. Some of them, like Darla for example, almost looked like the original actress that played her had come back and not aged a single day. You will be consumed by the same laughter you come to expect from these characters. The rascals try different ways to make money for their Grandmas bakery to say up. They have many crazy harebrained ideas, some of which are downright hilarious. The movie really is a great watch for adults and children alike. While the ending I must admit I was not a fan of. I feel just because a movie doesn't end well, that the entire movie is bad.
Overall, it was very enjoyable.

Psych (2006)
A new review for the binge watchers out there
Having just watched the series finale, and having previously watched all of the episodes I felt a new review for those wanting to binge watch this in the future could get some insight from.
The show is based in Santa Barbara, California, and follows the adventures of Shawn Spencer and Burton Guster in their adventures of aiding the local police in solving various crimes throughout the series. When brought down to the bread and butter of the sure it sounds like it could be just another police drama on CBS or NBC right?
During the eight years the show ran, mostly in the summer, it could be counted on for laugh after laugh. I compare the comedy in this show to that of "The Big Bang Theory," for the simple fact that the comedy in both is well thought out and demonstrated very well, and with almost perfect timing.
You find yourself falling in love with the characters, and hoping they get what they want as the seasons progress. Throughout the show Sean is fooling the police, which mainly include Jules 'O' Hara (Maggie Lawson), chief Karen Vick (Kristen Nelson), and Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson).
Sean and Gus start a psychic detective agency with skills Sean learned while growing up with his Dad (Corbin Bernsen), fooling everyone along the way that Sean has psychic powers.
Such a great show throughout the years ended with the curse of so many shows before it of the fatal final season. Different cast members were looking for different projects, and without the chemistry of all of the supporting cast the show does lose some of its luster.
In the end though if you are looking for a show to watch that will keep you entertained and laughing while you watch the characters develop this is the show for you.

Cold Comes the Night (2013)
It's Hard to find a good film, but this is one of them
For me this movie was very moving from the beginning. I personally have never seen Alice Eve in a movie where she wasn't playing the "hot" girl for lack of a better term. Even in Big Nothing (which if you haven't seen I highly recommend), she was in a way set as the "hot" girl. Same as ATM for any of you fellow watch to many movie folk like myself.
From the get go she played a persona unlike any other I have seen her do so I was a bit skeptic going in. Hardly any making, acting very depressed and withdrawn from life. Her being withdrawn I believe was completely intention because it set up the characteristics needed for the 2nd half of the film.
Bryan Cranston was absolutely amazing in his portrayal of Topo. I have not seen a simple hit-man have such depth since iceman. Chloe hits it right on the head when she says "What is a hit-man supposed to do when he is almost completely blind."
I followed the movie from beginning to end and the only slow spot that didn't quite jibe with me was the very last part of the film. Without giving away to much the ending I felt the fate of Topo was rather misplaced. A character that displayed so much finesse and ability, should have known someone that had a grudge for him in that town would be looking for him.
Fans of a good keep you guessing will love this movie and everyone else like it just as well. I suggest picking up and giving it a shot, so ENJOY!

The Amityville Asylum (2013)
Another nail in a horror series that has become a joke
I love these kind of movies. I remember being a kid, and staying up all need terrified reading the book to the original. I have seen all of these from the beginning all the way up to the more recent semi documentary My Amityville Horror. I will say there is a bright point to this movie, and since it is the only bright point I will not ruin it here. It happens during the interview with Allison and Atkins. It was rather ridiculous, and something we are all truly afraid of. The movie is filled with characters that we are never really inclined to care about. Filled with lore that fans of the the series (because let's be honest no one else is watching these) already know about. The movie does come up with new random lore that has never been mentioned as far as I know anyway. Among the many problems that infect (not plague) this movie, are the unbelieving lines delivered by the main characters. The attempt at the end was appreciated but I for one could not believe that Allison really believed what she was supposed to, and therefore that took away from the entire final act.
Duress (2009)
A seemingly predictable movie with some twists.
I admit the main reason I watched this is because I am a giant nerd and was a fan of Ariel Winter because of Final Fantasy 13-2. I have seen Martin Donovon in many different things and he usually brought a little something to the table.
I originally had this as a 4 because it seemed very straight forward as home terror movies have seemed to go as of late. I initially compared it to things like The Strangers, and You're Next.
After the initial excitement it quickly winds down for me and it becomes what appears to be a very boring movie. I think they worked a little to hard at covering up the things they were trying to conceal, because the middle part of the movie did seem very slow.
Without revealing to much there are a few twists in the end, one of which I think anyone can see miles away, and then something else happens which in the opinion of this writer, truly made the movie in a higher quality.
All in all I think it is worth a watch, just drudge through the middle, and you will be rewarded!
