Knock at the Cabin (2023)
Shallowest movie by Shyamalan so far
Apocalypse? *Four* people announcing it? You know how the movie's going to end in like the first 15 minutes!
I haven't watched the trailer but maybe I should've. It would've saved me the struggle. I guess it's a gamble going in blind on some movies.
No twists, no turns, same old thriller hostage suspense we've seen hundreds of times.
I actually expected that the movie will end in a true Shyamalan fashion with a shot inside the so-many-times mentioned basement where some of the four intruders set up some tapes for the TV and fooled the hostages into sacrificing because the intruders were some sociopaths/social outcasts/actual religious fanatics, but no, all we get is a below average apocalypse movie.
Would not recommend.
Kingmeikeo (2022)
Loved it.
This is a movie for a specific audience and with specific motifs.
I just realized that I like very much these political dramas/thrillers. This is turning out to be one of my favorite genres to be quite honest!
The backdoor intrigues, the corruption, bribery, the wittiness of the protagonist, the lust for power by the president, the need for the president's underlings to prove themselves, the protagonist's dilemmas - money or recognition and winning at all costs, all portrayed excellently in this movie.
If you're into political movies, you'll get 2 hours of pure entertainment, not a single boring scene in this movie. I absolutely recommend it!
Something in the Dirt (2022)
Weakest film by the duo so far. But...
Another original film by the duo Benson/Moorhead. But this time was more focused on drama and character development by the two lead protagonists/directors. The mystery of the phenomenon had me pretty interested throughout the movie but at certain point I kinda gave up on it since the accent was put so much more on the effects and the relationship between the two guys rather than the story or the origin of the phenomenon.
BUT, this film also gave me strong Resolution (2012) vibes. Resolution too was a movie about two dudes in similar situation but with very different relationship and backstories, then years later The Endless (2017) explained in glorious way the questions we had about The Resolution back in 2012.
It may be silly to assume, but we miiight just get another sequel/prequel regarding the unanswered backstory of Something in the Dirt.
Smile (2022)
Nice. I was expecting more though.
Acting - great, atmosphere - great, storytelling - not so much.
First off the birthday present scene was one of the best scenes I've seen in 2022. The mental breakdown and descent into chaos and panic was awesome.
I was expecting a more thorough explanation behind the curse or the phenomenon or the symptom or whatever it was that caused people to smile and kill themselves. Was her mother cursed? And by who/what? I was disappointed that we didn't get the origin story of the curse (which almost every decent horror movie does), did she had some mental illness, schizophrenia maybe? The curse clearly attacks traumatized people. Why was her mother traumatized and killed herself by taking pills?
The curse monster is pretty creepy too.
The Infernal Machine (2022)
5.2 rating? Whatt?!
This is one of the better mystery thrillers to come out in 2022. Its literally a hidden gem in a sea of cr*p.
Its original, it does good job explaining the story, the theme, the mystery, the character of the protagonist, his struggles, his personality, everything! (well except maybe for the whole restaurant scene, which reminded me of The Game (1997), when we're left to our own devices to decipher who was that woman working for - maybe Dwight? We'll never know, and in the grand scheme of things I don't think it was really THAT important)
I'm really baffled by the low ratings, and sometimes its just better to see the user's ratings (which DO NOT correlate with the IMDB ratings.) before watching something.
IMO, they should've put more effort into implementing the whole numbers station effect on the story though, what was the meaning of the numbers? A Nazi subversion on US citizens? It clearly influenced Dwight, but how?!
Anyway, for me, this movie was a blast!
Barbarian (2022)
Meh.
I see that all the hype about this movie is about its unpredictability. Which is true till the moment when you see the bosom of the "monster".
Up until that moment I actually thought it was a huge conspiracy involving a mutant population beneath the once peaceful and idyllic suburbia that the local government and police knew about and kept it under the rug. Never mind, none of that.
The moments when the movie transitions from horror to personal problems of the director/screenwriter/whatever the guy was was pretty funny got to admit.
But for people that are familiar with horrors/thrillers this will be very predictable and kind of goofy to be honest.
Also this movie is probably inspired by Josef Fritzl. Check that real life nightmare of a story out.
The Expanse: Babylon's Ashes (2022)
Absolutely disappointed.
I refuse to accept that such massive storytelling and plots could just end on something like "Leave it, lets worry about it later.".
I read that the fourth season was entirely adopted from the books, and it was the best one of the series for me.
I really don't know why would they leave the series with sooo many crucial holes. And the writers actually KNEW it was going to end like this?! What?!
Okay, I get it, SyFy may not have the budget for more seasons, but freaking Amazon sure does. I'm baffled at how indifferent the writing and directing crew were about the series's ending.
I rarely watch TV shows and this was one of my favorites so far. And I'm utterly disappointed.
Its so sad to see such amazing sci-fi show ending like this. For me it was the sci-fi show of our generation.
I'm sad to say it, but I actually DO NOT recommend this show to anybody wanting a concise start-to-finish storytelling and structure.
Nope (2022)
Yeah, nope indeed.
Starts out pretty interesting with the TV show becoming a blood fest. And I was actually thinking that it had something to do with the mystery in the ranch, were the aliens manipulating animals to become violent? Is this how they experiment on humans? Did they lure the horses to make them do something bad like kicking people (hint at the beginning)? Silly thought, but its more consistent than the unnecessary TV show massacre subplot.
I think that this film could've been saved by a cliche twist ending in the lines of: "its just a weather balloon that mixed up with alien DNA buried deep in some secret base by the army, and the balloon has gone awry" or some other top secret govt program. Just saying.
But no, it really turns out to be some kind of silly looking cloth-like alien predator lol.
5 stars for the actors doing good and having to bear with the goofy script.
Worst movie by Key Peele so far.
Prey (2022)
Huge disappointment for a prequel
Yes, absolute disappointment. Seeing the hype and the Metascore really got me excited for this one since I hoped for at least some backstory for the iconic Predator race.
So yeah, we get no backstory, no history, no explanation whatsoever, out of context AND YET AGAIN Predator falls out of the sky for no reason other than to kill and shock the audience. No substance, no nothing, same old killing methods and well known Predator tools and armor (a bit primitive than the others, but really its only the look of it lol) put into action but in this case against a tribe.
Zhou (2022)
Average.
Over-hyped and too long Taiwanese found footage.
Just cut the movie by 30 minutes and you get somewhat decent yet still flawed and I must say unoriginal found footage movie with elements borrowed from other famous found footage horrors (I won't mention them, because I'm not shilling for any of them, but if you're a horror fan you will know which movies I'm talking about)
The target here is probably younger audience that gets easily creeped out by those goofy chants and symbols and that internet meme about tiny holes.
Also, the mother's face is just a hole?! Wth was that about? Big horror let down. 5/10.
The Rental (2020)
Good movie aching at a sequel
The acting, atmosphere, setup, (which are good btw) everything in this movie is setup for a sequel for me, mainly because you can't just leave the villain's identity hidden and ambiguous.
For a standalone movie his identity and story must've been revealed but given the last few scenes, the director is basically going for a sequel.
Idk, we should just wait and get the sequel, so far so good. :)
Willy's Wonderland (2021)
Nah
After Mandy and Color Out of Space I was expecting another b-movie gem starring Nicholas Cage. This wasn't it. I wanted to see him getting crazy and showing emotions like the other 2 movies I mentioned, and instead we got a non-speaking dull and boring protagonist.
Ok, at first it was charming to see him not utter a single word, but later in the moive I was shouting at the monitor: "TALK DAMN IT"!. Very poor execution of a non-speaking protagonist!
Also, I really hoped he had some background for example his wife and kid(s) were killed but he somehow survived and returned to avenge their deaths, or maybe he was a kid that witnessed some killings taking place and had so much trauma he couldn't speak after it - NOT! Not a single scene where ANY of his behavior is explained. The moments when he's so much sticking to his schedule and letting the kids die really angered me too. Again, NO EXPLANATION whatsoever about that too!
All in all, a very, VERY big disappointment.
Boss Level (2020)
Awesome!
Excellent combination of sci-fi, mystery, thriller and comedy. Love how it plays with the usual boss fight scenes in movies. Great acting by our protagonist too.
I highhly recommend it!
Tenet (2020)
I have a problem
Everything in this movie is top notch except the story. Awesome and original idea but it fell apart for me when it was all concentrated around a single bad guy, a default cliche that actually threw me out of it. I also wanted to get to know the origin story a little bit too!
Lapsis (2020)
Honestly, a let-down.
First off, I really anticipated this movie. The original sci-fi story, execution and atmosphere is top notch I got to admit.
Great acting by the lead actor too which I read it was only his second movie credit. Absolutely killed it!
Throughout the movie there's this constant scary atmospheric sound which makes you think that there will be some twist, grand revealing, or conclusion at the end. That didn't happen, and instead we got a social commentary about corporate greed and basically the argument for workers unions. Which was disappointing to me (I have nothing against those arguments though). I just really thought there was going to be something more at the end. That's all.
The Kid Detective (2020)
Its all goofs and laughs
Until you get freaking goosebumps. Its all I'm gonna say about it. Just watch it.
The Empty Man (2020)
Excellent movie
First time watching a horror movie that made me feel like I was watching a new genre. To me, this was something like an "epic" horror to be honest.
I also saw reviews that say that there were too many plots, while there were multiple plots, I personally think they were executed pretty darn good.
The occult stuff is explained multiple times throughout the movie so much so that even a person unfamiliar with it will actually learn something about it. I really liked that.
This movie is an excellent mixture of horror, thriller, mystery and fantasy. I highly recommend it.
Bloody Hell (2020)
Pretty good movie
In the trivia I read that the director got the idea from a foreign couple looking at him weirdly at the airport.
So It only took this situation to make a whole movie which was executed pretty darn good (which isn't the case for most of the indie low budget horror movies to be frank). Kudos to him!
Great setup, solid script, straightforward, the vision of the director is presented very clearly (as it should) in this types of movies.
I liked it, I absolutely recommend it.
Go/Don't Go (2020)
Disappointment
I was really looking forward for this movie given its categorized as my favorite genres (sci-fi mystery). I thought: ok, not a drama fan BUT I still hope its gonna be a good sci-fi mystery. I guess that's the "gamble" you have to make when you watch indie movies.
Yeah, utterly disappointed. I saw "slow burner" descriptions for it too. Yeah, its slow alright, its gonna burn your time too!
What caused him being alone in the town? Catastrophic event? Was it a dream? Was it some kind of alternate universe? Is he schizoid? Did his girlfriend die during the event? And how? Who killed her? Literally none of these question are answered!
Just a poor drama, not sci-fi, not a mystery.
Deadlocked (2020)
One of the most average zombie movies
Given the low budget and limited resources, this movie was executed good actually.
I liked how they tried their best at the special effects too, for some reason I saw passion in that.
I expected a bit more twists and turns given the elevator setup and that whole claustrophobic situation, but it turned out pretty mundane and predictable at the end. This movie had lots, and I mean LOTS of zombie action cliches, which kinda let me down too, but that's just me. I think zombie fans will like it.
Anything for Jackson (2020)
Decent horror
Scary and tense moments throughout, which were nicely executed.
I really liked the idea of the culmination taking place at daytime too.
Also, I loved the portrayal of the elderly couple as devout satanists (just your average desperate grandma and grandpa trying to bring their nephew back at all costs).
Good job. I recommend it!
Hunter Hunter (2020)
Great stuff
Quiet and tense movie that ends with a bang. Kept me interested throughout. Solid performance. I recommend it
Darkness in Tenement 45 (2020)
Meh
I liked the story and acting. The atmosphere was ok. Good setup but the twist was very, very predictable and the movie was boring at times.
For me it lacked a closure too.
The Vanished (2020)
OK movie
I was entertained by it for the most part, I liked the atmosphere too.
I feel like there were many side plot holes tbqh. And without them the movie would've lasted less than an hour. They lost me. The ending was good for a mystery thriller.
Kind of a "meh" mystery thriller for me. Liked the twist though.
Books of Blood (2020)
Excellent horror.
I loved it. Every aspect of it. Acting, atmosphere, setup, storytelling, everything. It fits perfectly all together.
For me personally, one of the best horrors of 2020.
I highly recommend it.
