Saltburn (2023)
Tedious, disappointing..
This movie had so much potential but doesn't live up to the hype.
And it's a poor remake/ adaption of Talented Mr Ripley..( Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Phillip Seymour Huffman.) Now that was a classic with frenetic pace and suspense, that was largely missing from Saltburn. Barry Keoghan is no Matt Damon. Other than a few funny lines from the fabulous Rosamund Pike, I was getting bored. Overrated shock value scenes and this is what qualifies as Oscar material these days?. Disgusting.
If you want to watch British aristocracy , a few episodes of the Downton Abbey will be more interesting.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Tedious and boring
Best picture oscar?? Please.. Not impressed at all with Netflix's oscar nominations this year. (this movie along with Lost Daughter and Tic tic boom).
First half is hopelessly slow. The pace picks up a bit in the second half. But takes an unexpected homoerotic turn. This aint Brokeback Mountain. Now that was a great movie.
Benedict Cumberbatch is good with what material he got to work with. Kristen Dunst has nothing to do other than cry and whine and get drunk.
The Comeback (2005)
Had potential but still painful to watch.
Lot of cringe in this show. Valerie Cherish gets humiliated over and over. It was funny the first couple of times. But the way she gets horribly treated by the writers, especially the offensive Paulie G character, is hard to watch. They could have made her character more strong, and less annoying and stupid.
The show was indeed ahead of its times, well over a decade before the #MeToo movement and the exposure of the misogyny prevailing in the male dominated entertainment industry (similar to other industries like tech and finance), which is clearly why the show didnt get good reviews and was cancelled after season 1.
I thought season 1 was better than season 2. Fastforward 10 years and the show made another 'comeback'. Season 2's premise was that the Valerie comes back as a 'meaner' version of her, so to speak, to star in a HBO sitcom about her character from the season 1 sitcom written and directed by her nemesis Paulie G. I didnt notice much of a difference in Lisa Kudrow's portrayal of this supposedly more nastier Valerie. She isnt half as mean as Paulie G was to her in season 1. Just the same grating voice and being idiotic, so it was hard to root for her or the show. And like the other writer says "why would you even work with him again?". Just a weak story line.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
Terrible
Another disaster from netflix/hollywood. Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams? It was so cringy i turned it off in 30 mins. They couldnt get any euro stars to play the leads? just insulting to the icelandic people.
Hustlers (2019)
Trash movie .. not even worth rental
JLo parties in clubs with her sistas, drugging and robbing wealthy men and gets caught eventually. That's the story. Nothing to see here. Save your money and time.
and she wants an Oscar nomination for this "performance"? gimme a break.
The Politician (2019)
Garbage show
Another Ryan Murphy production - Predictable, over the top, annoying characters, who all happen to be gay/bi/pan sexual ... yaaawn. Overacting and why is everyone screaming all the time? Started dragging after episode 2. Nothing likable about the lead character. Narcissistic. and the fashion/ wardrobe choices were outlandish. Jessica lange has played that character so many times before. Tiresome.
Cancelling my Netflix subscription. Had enuf of these garbage shows.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Season 4 is awful
Followup to my season 3 review.
Season 4 is just a big mess. Plot is all over the place, contrived story lines, including the disjointed ending. One episode is about a shooting drill in school. Next students stage a protest and riot against the police. and out of the blue one main character is dying of AIDS? what??
Clay's narration, disassociate disorder and his therapy session was interesting for the first episode or so, but to stretch it to the whole season is unbearable. Just had to fast forward all the Clay monologues.
Season 3 review - Ani...Nothing about this character makes sense. She has been in the school only a few months, but everyone confides in her about their secrets. She has no business meddling in everyone's business and is the queen of eavesdropping. The reason she is so intrigued to solving the murder mystery, isnt convincing at all. The constant snooping around at home and school conversations was just so annoying, i couldnt get past episode 5. Her narrative/voice over was just like a copy of the voice over of the lead character in Euphoria. it didnt work there and it doesnt work here.
Clay Jensen was pretty annoying too. Clay and Ani are now detectives out to find the murderer and randomly accusing their friends without any evidence? Gimme a break.
This had all the elements for an interesting murder mystery story but completely fails due to the two annoying leads.
Big Little Lies (2017)
Season 2 BORING!
Repetitive, showing the same flashback scenes like a million times...yaawn!
First couple of episodes were good. But otherwise one dimensional characters, in uninteresting storylines. Meryl Streep plays the mother-in-law from hell, the only highlight of season 2. The "secret" at the end of the season 1 was silly to begin with, and they just dragged it out for the entire second season.
Kalank (2019)
Borefest... Dont waste your time
The bad reviews have it right and the box office verdict was a flop. This is one long movie, with a razor thin storyline, all style and no substance. Even with fast forwarding on amazon prime, it felt like it was never ending.
The climax scene at the train station dragged on an on (also a copy of the climax from DDLJ). It was somewhat interesting till the half way mark and then it completely fell apart with unnecessarily painful dialogues and long song and dance sequences.
Varun, Aditya, Sonakshi were ok, with the material they were given. Alia bhatt still cant act nor does she have the personality to carry a role like this. Madhuri repeating the same dance and acting from her Devdas days, just tiresome.
I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter (2019)
iPhone Texting for two hours
The story is interesting from a legal standpoint but the background sound while they were showing the constant exchange of txts between the guy and the girl was really annoying. Was that the only way to present the story? Or maybe the story just didn't translate well to a Dateline style documentary.
It's a really sad state of affairs in this country where drugs are being prescribed by doctors to teenagers at such a young age for mental health problems- major or minor, and the kids just grow up to get addicted to medications and leading unhealthy lifestyles. Prescribing Prozac to a 14 year old kid? Seriously?
and then people wonder why there are more suicides among teenagers these days. Jeez.
The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley (2019)
Rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes
HBO has made a few good documentaries - the Scientology one, Leaving Neverland and now the fascinating story of the over ambitious, zealot Ms Holmes who led her company Theranos to a whopping $9 billion evaluation only to self destruct due to the stunning web of lies, deception and fraud, she and her partner/COO engaged in to not only dupe her investors, but also patients and her own employees.
Her original idea/vision was noble but the she seemed more about cultivating an image to become the next Steve Jobs of healthcare and being on the cover of Fortune, Time and multiply other nationwide publications.
The first half is a story about how a young Stanford student went to found her "disruptive" tech startup, and the second half predictably gets dark and depressing, culminating in the downfall of the company.
I live and work in Silicon Valley, so this story hit close to home. Some of the management practices and the work culture at Theranos weren't dissimilar to that of many other startups in the area, but the sheer lengths to which she went to market a product that was horribly malfunctioning and so far removed from what she had promised and potentially putting lots of customers' lives in danger, was downright shocking. She is obviously delusional and didn't back down even after the onslaught of lawsuits, the SEC, CMS and FBI investigations and kept telling the same lies over and over to the wide eyed media, who were so gullible to believe her in the first place. Was she that far removed from reality?
There are some parallels to the Fyre Festival fiasco , but the deceptions were on a much larger scale.
I liked this documentary along with the ABC news podcasts about this story and John Carreyou's book "Bad Blood".
Anthony Jeselnik: Fire in the Maternity Ward (2019)
Boring
Really slow delivery that put me to sleep. I like dark humor but didnt find his jokes that funny.
His previous special "Thoughts and prayers" was much better.
Chambers (2019)
Slow boring mess
It started out fine, interesting plot, beautiful location , but from episode 4 onwards, just kept dragging without moving the story forward and the plot was all over the place - scifi, supernatural horror, and then full blown teen drama like 13 reasons why. Could be condensed to just 5 episodes instead of 10.
The Lobster (2015)
What was the point of this weird movie?
I thought it was going to be a dark comedy, but it quickly turned into a twisted tale, with unsavory characters, that dragged on and on for two hours, along with annoying background music.
The lead character showed no emotion, just robotic way of expressing himself, probably instructed by the director to act in that way.
And the plot itself is totally absurd and regressive. Seemed more like a dystopian past, not future.
Junebug (2005)
Weird boring movie
It was like watching paint dry. This movie is dated now, just like some of the other indie movies from more than a decade ago. No concrete storyline. None of the issues between characters resolved.
Mundane slow moving shots of living room, kitchen and bedroom, was this supposed to be 'artsy' and deep?
Amy adams character, while endearing was also annoying.
Dont waste your time watching this.
'Juno' from that era was a much better movie.
Fyre (2019)
Dumpster fire festival..brought to you by a conman
This was bound to fail from the start. Festivals like burning man and Coachella on the mainland, do planning and logistics for months and you know what you are going to it , given they have been doing it for years, decades.
Here we have a bunch of people from NYC in charge of putting together a music festival on an island, something they collectively had no experience doing it before.
I dont have much sympathy for the guys who invested time and effort to work for that fraudster and didnt have the balls to call it all off before the event.
To the naive millenials who wasted thousands of dollars , its mindboggling how they can be so clueless. Didnt they see the red flags weeks or months before the event? Loading up a lot of money on top of the high ticket cost on RFID wristbands? you cant be such idiots. Lmao.
The guy at the end said it right. Billy is in jail now but we havent heard the last from him. Ten years down the line, he will be back with a new shiny idea to swindle people and suckers will fall for it. Buyer beware - he is a serial liar and delusional. Run far far away.
Bird Box (2018)
Garbage movie
I got bored an hour into the movie. Didnt care for any of the characters. Sandra Bullock is so annoying.
You (2018)
Creepy AF
8.1 stars? gimme a break.
Started out ok, but got annoyed with the lead character's voice-over after a few episodes. Are we supposed to think the stalker's actions are justified?
Did the people he kill have issues? yes. But that doesnt justify stalking and killing his supposed enemies.
Suspend all disbelief while watching this show. Lot of plot holes. So he can just kill Benji boy in the basement and none of Benji's rich family or friends have reported his disappearance to the police? Nobody bothered to remotely locate his phone in the psycho's bookstore basement.
Is Beck that oblivious to what is going on around her ? couple of her best friends have disappeared or died since she started hanging out with psycho Joe. but she has no inkling something is wrong with him, when he seemingly shows up everywhere she goes in the city. He can also hear all her conversations with her friends from 20 feet away in loud bars. suurre... Completely ridiculous.
Sanju (2018)
Overrated
Movie could have been cut short by an hour. or focused on other more interesting aspects and people in Sanju's life - his wives/family, his relationships with other big stars (Madhuri Dixit, Salman khan?).. That material is completely missing from the movie. Too much screen time for the Kamli friendship angle. Boring. The drug addiction part dragged on way too long.
I wouldnt consider this movie a biopic as it was only focused on portraying Sanju as an innocent victim of the unfair media coverage. The guy has repeatedly made bad choices in his life and we are supposed to feel sorry for him. Yaawn.
Melodramatic background music was annoying.
Ranbir's acting was good though. Would surely win him many awards.
Cant rate it more than 5 stars. but its an ok movie compared to other junk that bollywood churns out.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)
Tired, old love story from the Chopras..
I happen to Netflix this the other night as I hadn't seen a Bollywood movie in a while. This movie is another long, epic, dramatic love saga set in the backdrop of London and Kashmir. Couldn't Mr. Yashji come up with something original for his swan song? Granted it was shot beautifully with some nice song and dance sequences, we have seen this many times before in Yash Raj romantic, fantasy movies like DDLJ, K3G, KHNH, Mohabattein to name a few.
While the movie kept my interest for the first hour or so, it completely fell apart in the second half with its unrealistic storyline, bizarre 'twists', illogical situations and just downright stupidity exhibited by the actors. The whole premise of Katrina praying to God time and time again to fulfill her wishes at different points in her life, in exchange for something she loves/likes is just too weak and unconvincing.
Shah Rukh's freak accident towards the end of the first half leads our leading lady to pray to God to save his life in exchange for their love and a promise to never see him again. WTF?? This makes no sense and the writer/director of this movie is just insulting the intelligence of the viewer. We are to believe an affluent, independent girl in modern day London cant make decisions of her own and is making silly pacts with Jesus regarding matters of the heart. Instead of helping her love interest recover from the accident and be supportive when he most needed her, she abandons him as she believes in a bizarre way that being with him will only endanger his life. *facepalm*. So Mr. Khan who till now has been doing part-time jobs waiting tables at restaurants or making ends meet singing on the streets of London, decides to move back to India and become an Army officer, specializing in diffusing bombs, because of his silly belief that only death can bring him closer to his girl. *facepalm again*
It all goes downhill from here. Enter Anushka Sharma, the sexy but annoying reporter with an obnoxious attitude, who happens to stumble upon Shah Rukh's diary of his love story in London, is now fascinated with him and wants to desperately work on a documentary about Khan, the now famous bomb diffuser in Kashmir. Overnight, she is sent on this project and soon after, she is seen gyrating in skimpy shorts with the army officers in the cold, frigid mountains of Ladakh. Scene after scene of Khan diffusing bombs like its a piece of cake while Ms. Anushka treating this project as a fun vacation, connecting with him frivolously and talking about his love story, is just cringe inducing. During this process she also happens to fall in love with Khan. oh boy.. Can we expect a semblance of realism from YRF films? This is 2014, not 1994.
The final act of the movie is just tedious and put me to sleep. There is another freak accident that our poor hero has to endure, following which he suffers from selective amnesia. He forgets about Anushka and thinks he just awoke following the trauma from the first accident. Katrina comes back in his life and a long, melodramatic climax ties up the loose ends. The only sensible dialog is Anushka putting some sense into Katrina, telling her to stop with her silly pacts with God and go, be with the man she loves.
Shah Rukh's acting was fine. I found him tolerable compared to his usual overacting. While his forte has always been romance whether be with Kajol, Rani, Preity and now Katrina, he has obviously aged and should take on more mature roles like the army officer he plays in the second half. Ms.Kaif is smoking hot, but her constant wooden expressions in some of the emotional scenes didn't do justice to the role. As for Anushka, perhaps a bit subtlety in her acting would have made her less annoying. Cinematography was the best and A.R.Rahman's music, while not his best, was still melodious.
With this, I hope we have seen the last of the formulaic epic love sagas from Yash Raj Films. This isn't Yashji's masterpiece. Sorry. far from it. I believe Dil To Pagal Hai was his last good movie. He lost his touch since, and his attempt to make the tried and tested love stories set in foreign locations along with the stereotypical portrayal of NRIs in London or New York, and characters to appeal to the younger audience, just falls flat and is a waste of time for the audience.
