Ride with Larry (2013)
Inspiring
A great diary of a man who didn't give up.
Heart-warming, enjoyable.
If you've ever known someone to suffer from this kind of terminal illness, it might be hard to watch, and also inspiring nonetheless.
I found it challenging to view, after my own experiences with this kind of affliction, but Larry's humour and will was outstanding.
The people around him and the community of folks he encountered give a truer sense of American life.
I don't know why this film isn't more popular. I believe if you buy the DVD some of the money goes to one of the supporting foundations, and at the credits there are more options if a donation wouldn't be too much to ask for.
Neverwas (2005)
Magical.
I don't know where eabrownfield (reviewer) gets off telling people to "stay away" from Neverwas. This is a magical, and very touching story.
An excellent premise with a superb cast and stellar performances from all involved. The scenic settings were well shot and lit, often showing the differences between the dark and lighter sides of life.
I say dark, yes there are parts in this film that are hard hitting, poinient moments that really make you think and get you inside the characters being played, again i think this is down to the great acting.
The flip side is the fairy tale narrative that runs through the whole film, not that it turns in to a children's film at all, as its a story I'm sure many can relate to and will enjoy being told in this fashion. I will say it probably deserves its pg13 rating, its perhaps not for the very young, despite its fairy tale like appearance.
Overall go and see this film, you wont be disappointed, i had a great time.
Before It Had a Name (2005)
Nothing unique about it
Predictable, told a thousand times story with the usual drama in between, a couple of pretty raunchy sex scenes intermingled with some character paranoia, 70's style incidental violin horror music that is comical at times, i couldn't help chuckling to myself.
I usually like Defoe, and it has to be said that the acting is not all that bad, the "plot" develops at a reasonable pace and does keep you guessing from time to time. Its just that it's all too predictable, i felt like i was watching a made for TV drama instead of a new movie. Maybe thats the style the directors wanted, but it has to be said that the review i read on here before i saw the movie could only have been written by someone involved in its production.
Don't expect too much, and if i could wind the clock back i wouldn't have gone to see it at the cinema. I would wait for the bargain bins at your video shop, I'm sure it wont take long.
