Ticket to Paradise (2022)
Who wrote this?
Did Lily just graduate from college? Or law school? Because they are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. Like just do a little research. Surely you have ONE FRIEND who went to law school. And while I hate to think that was what ruined this movie for me- it was such a stupid and glaring mistake. People who went to law school never say they just graduated from college. Because that was three years ago. And in most states, a newly graduated law student is studying for the bar exam. And George and Julia are adorable, but good god are they awful. It's not a redemption arc as much as switch. It was a weak story in a beautiful place with beautiful people.
Inside Man (2022)
Dark comedy/ morality play
This show is an absurd dark comedy morality play. Like a lot of Moffat's work, the parallels are being played out throughout. The set up seemed sophomoric, but the twists and escalations were so smart! The story is neatly packaged with a couple of ancillary surprises thrown in. The sneering opening dichotomy is the template for all of the stories that come after. Stanley Tucci as an evil ... genius... is a lovely touch. Some of my favorite small touches: the wife who tells the vicar upon leaving church with her husband - he's still an atheist. Bens girlfriend pointing out how strange it is that his parents are the vicar and the woman who $&@!s the vicar. I was absolutely delighted by this show. The show could have been better with more nuance, but in todays world, nuance is too often overlooked.
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022)
A comedy?
I mean I laughed aloud a few times but this movie is NOT a comedy. It was a beautiful film and Emma Thompson was brilliant. I loved the movie, but not a comedy. I repeat- not a comedy.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Why?
There were moments of beauty - Jonathon Groff is always worth watching. But - good lord. This was painfully slow to get to action and then actually took an epic story and somehow made it TINY. Sooooo long and soooo derivative. I am so disappointed in myself that I spent 2 1/2 hours watching this. What was the point of this entire series, but certainly this movie? Don't waste your time.
Gemini Man (2019)
So close
The story was interesting though predictable. The cinematography was breathtaking. The cgi- 1990s. For real. Sooo jarring. Not good. With the huge names attached I expected better, although this movie would get a 3 no matter who was in or made it. We sat through it. I cannot recommend it though. To anyone.
In the Flesh (2013)
One of the best TV shows EVER
This is quite simply one of the best TV shows ever. This show is marvelously and tightly plotted, but it is not about "zombies". The plot is about relationships - the relationship between Rick and Ren that led to the implosion of Ren's family and a direct line to his sister's involvement in the HVF. In the third episode of the first season, the conversation between Ren and his mom in the cave made me sob. Mascara streaks and pausing the show for twenty minutes. "I would love you if you came back as a goldfish." As tight as the story is, the suspense in season two is just as fun as the plot begins to blossom.
Some of the plot lines: the ideas of love and life, acceptance, sexuality, suicide, government policies, slang and labels, popularity and what we will do to fit in versus individuality, equal rights, our idea of sickness and disease, familial relationships and roles, parents' dreams and ideas for their children, history and the way it is taught in the formal education system, religion and the belief systems that are insidious in small villages, radicalism in many forms, self-delusions,alternative medicine, immigration issues. It is all amazingly well captured in this little drama.
I have NEVER given a TV show a 10 before and I hope that I do get to see another 10 star show in my lifetime. This show is much better than Walking Dead (which I also love). Re-integration instead of apocalypse. You can't look away or you will miss the relationships between all the people in the storyline. Watch it more than once to catch all the amazing s*** in the background. I love this show.
