Shades of Day (2006)
Dream and reality/ Shades of Day-Director's Cut 2013
I had the chance to watch a private screening of "Shades of Day-Director's Cut 2013" and I must confess it is a very moving film in that it portrays the most human of emotions in the city of dreams, Hollywood. The director Vitaly Sumin and his actors masterly show us the contrast between dream and reality. Most of the film is in black and white as if one is immersed in the Hollywood dream, but then the color frames suddenly appear like a call back to the real world.
The title,"Shades of Day", is also another example of the constant contrast within the film, as opposed to Dostoevsky's novel, "White Nights", from which the director was inspired. Dream and reality, day and night, shade and brightness, love and hatred, dependency and freedom ... the movie revolves around all of these emotions. The director has pursued this atmosphere of contrast and I believe he has wittily achieved this effect.
All in all, this is a very thoughtful and sensitive movie that will not leave the spectator indifferent.
