Reptile (2023)
Such great style and actors but sooo obviously and empty..
In the beginning i though "ooooh lucky me... this is a David Fincher film i didnt know came out"... the style reminded me so much of seven and zodiac...
But then the very obvious things started to happen and all of that style and the great Del Toro became secondary to growing irritation and boredom.
I just dont understand how its possible to take a decent premise and write such an uninspired screenplay around it.
I really dont like writing negative reviews but i get upset when i feel i am duped.
Del Toro is a favorite. A great face, character, actor.
But when i see his name as co writer and producer and the film turns out like this i feel him and some others do this really only for the money, or maybe they wanna give making a movie a shot...
And of course they have every right to... but
This one in my opinion didnt succeed.
Nowhere (2023)
This was definitely a very positive surprise.
Disclaimer first.
I just love a good confined space, llmited resource, one or few actor films.
And this one os o e of the better ones I have seen.
Obviously totally carried by great acting and directing. Totally belivable environment and effects.
I wont spoil It but the while folm is worth seeing if for nothing else, for an amazing scene in the middle of the film.
I mean i am going to check if she really was in that condition and did that for real... otherwise... wow mind blowing execution from the whole team :) yeah no spoiler, sorry...
I gave this a 9 because even though its not a deep, artistic, revolutionary film, the team behind it has accomplished all that they want to and for me thats a big win.
Definitely see this film. You wont have wasted your time :)
The Double (2013)
I cant believe how many "film buff critics" are trashing this movie...
Chill out guys :)
The referances and influences are obvious yes... but when combined together this movie does stand on its own feet and stand well.
Somebody commented that the setting was abstract unlike the otiginal short story. That it wasnt relatable.
Well... I saw the film as this might be how our protoganist experiences the world, not necessarily how everyone else is experiencing it.
Thus our writers and director have done a great job of creating a world from the perspective of a man who just doesnt fit in very well.
So again, i loved the recognizable referances to Gilliam, Orson Wells, Polanskis works... its great that people dare to put themselves out there to create films tough crowds will definitely criticize...
Also it IS his second film... that is a pretty darn great feat in my opinion. When especially working in such focused story.
The sound, music, actung, lighting, amazing camera work... I just dont understand the amount of negativity the film has gotten.
Please go and make your very inspired second film in your own perfect completely original style with this exact very important, relavant, commonly felt and difficult to navigate theme aaaand send me a link and i might understand all your hard criticisms here...
Good luck :)
Alone (2020)
What hapenned to the shovel? :)
Apart from a few rifts in logic and creative allowences to push a generic story forward the film did keep me interested...
Nothing new here but a decent tlme killer. Worked well on a night when i needed minimum brain activity.
10 points for that :)
Nice enough acting and directing...
I just wish the script was a more creative and didnt waste so much time in the beginning of the film.
Nothing special about filming and soundtrack.
Also they have used titles like "Rain", "River" and su h with splash screens. Reminds me of some very good quality films that do this. But here they are totally meaningless...
So yeah its worth a watch but dont expect hreat suspense if yoj like these kind of films.
Luther: The Fallen Sun (2023)
Had low expectations and was mostly entertained til the last 30 min when logic was totally thrown put the window.. still...
Ok... first i totally see the point of all the 2/10 comments.
The script is not great, ive seen Idris Elba act much more passionately (havent seen the series) and there are too many rifts in logic... but again we were entertained so i have a better score than i would usually give a film with that make up.
The story itself is interesting and does create suspense and at the end tries to touch a moral question.
But as i mentioned, the scrupt has too many flaws and problems with characters and their behaviour. .. so I dont know...
Guess my advice would be; watch it for entertainement with some flinching purpose, You will be fine... Dont watch it if you expect an intelligent script and solid acting and directing, Then you will be dissapointed like the 2sters :)
Ted Lasso (2020)
If you enjoy intelligent humorous entertainement with depth, this is it at its best.
I think my title says enough. But let me tell you how this series made me feel.
Bit first obviously, no spoiler, the setting is a footbal club in england and the drama arpund the characters. But rest assured you do not have to like or know anything about football... I really dont care about it. But if you, like me love human stories, this one is for you :)
Now the feelings bit...
Relaxed, excited, in pain because i fell of the sofa laughing a few times...
Angry at how bad people can behave, angry how i can be fooled knto being judgemental by the smart screenwriters.
Happy for the wins of each amazing character i felt close to and sad with them even with tears sometimes...
And this is a series where almost all the main characters go through a change and development... and I did care about them.
THAT right there is great storytelling and art.
Without making anything too complicated nor philosophical, without having to explain or taking creative privilages this serie really brings it home.
The Watch (2012)
I do like silly humour but this one took it too far for me :)
Now i did smile and laugh often... but usually while saying "seriously??" Or " arent these guys filthy rich? Why did they make this film?" Although Im sure this is their way of hanging out and having a ship load of fun while making a bigger ship load of money :)
We watched it last night and I said to my wife tonight "you know some films really deserve to be watched a second time cause you know, the layers... maybe we didnt really get it..." she rolled her eyes, asking "the watch"? Our laugh afyer tjat was worth the tome we spent watching the film :)
Anyway... if you decide to watch it, I hope you enjoy it more than i did.
Just wabt to say watch it for a suuuper silly entertainment value and expect lots of moronic adolecent sexual jokes which on repeat feels extremely obnoxious... to me.
