Ladder 49 (2004)
Could have been better
This film was a big disappointment to me, it had all the opportunities to be a great movie but it lack the ability to keep me interested. It started out really slow and didn't improve very much throughout the film. It's trailer depicted lots of action but in retrospect, action wasn't a key part of this film.
It's title alone was misleading as it referrers to the name of one of the Fire Trucks "Ladder 49" that ferries the inhabitant's of the fire department's rescue team, when in actual fact it focuses on a sole member of the firehouse Jack Morrison(Joaquin Phoenix), along with numerous flashbacks and family sequences, his transition from being single to parenthood.
Ladder 49 is a decent film in depicting the bravado and courage of self-less members of society that risk their lives for others through a dramatic display of characters and scenery, but this film has little else to offer in terms of entertainment. However, for those film lovers looking for a "Feel Good" movie this is it.
Raise Your Voice (2004)
Predictable tearjerker!
Raise your Voice was a good movie that held a lot of dramatic scenes with a talented and believable cast. However the movie follows a very predictable storyline of a small town , Terri Fletcher (Hillary Duff)out to achieve her dreams. It was slow to start off with, and had the common appearance of first love crushed by the jealous ex-girlfriend and then Terri and Jay get back together to do the final show(who didn't see that one coming?). Not to mention that Terri's Dad had been against her going to Los Angeles in the first place and changes his mind at the most crucial point in the movie,(very foreseeable).
This movie could have been better if the main character Terri had been recast because it is so noticeable that Hillary Duff is not singing some of those really high notes or has in fact prerecorded some of those singing numbers, which just takes away some of the believable factors of the film.
Overall,it was a descent movie, but better classified as a "Chick flick" because if you are an emotional type you'd be best to have a box of tissues next to you, cause you are going to cry.
Thunderbirds (2004)
EXCELLENT!! ....Just Loved It!
****** THIS COMMENT MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS****** When I first saw the trailer for the Thunderbirds movie I new immediately that I wanted to see it, though was hesitant to do so for reasons that I could never get into the TV series. For my generation of viewers the TV series lacked the interest it held for the viewers of it's time, however the movie was able to capture my attention so completely that the second it finish I watched it again and for a third time and then two days later had purchased the film.
My sudden love of the film came from it's wide casting range of both Known actors and actors new to film, as well as it's imaginative and well developed storyline,(my hats off to Johnathan Frakes- Director). The jokes and puns had me cracking up and I absolutely loved the set designs. Though the film itself is a great family feature I recommend that anyone that enjoys adventure, action and a little hostile take-over see this film, you won't be disappointed.
I truly believed the predicaments of Alan Tracy(Brady Corbet)of feeling left behind when his Dad and brothers got to go off and save the world and I loved Jeff Tracy (Bill Paxton)as the father figure, no one else could have had such a look of anguish on their face as Alan was nearly cut to pieaces by the "Mole". I do wish however, that the other Tracy Boys could have had a larger role.
Lady P. now there is a women who now's how to handle herself and yet what women in her right mind would wear that much pink or show up to the bad guy's break-in wearing that little number,it look like she's about to walk into a social affair and if Lady P. is such a fighter how come all we got when Mulon grabbed he was a "let me go" and a "dream on sad act"? Now if she hit him that would have as least been believable as well as funny.
On a final note I believed the movie was very well done and I hope their will be a sequel in it's future that doesn't jump to far into the future but retains the original actors at approximately the same age or a little older, demonstrating some of the thing's they have learnt from working with IR, and I know for a fact that there is nothing worse than a movie that recast's it's characters because they just takes away park of the stories effect.I know a great many people that would be disappointed to see the Thunderbirds finish here when they have so much to offer, myself included.
