The Thing (1982)
carpenters beast
anyone who gave this film less than a 7.5 at least is to be frank viewing it from a snobby point of view. They are the type of people who watched pulp fiction and thought it was trashy rubbish. This film originally received terrible reviews and nearly ruined John Carpenters carear! This was the man who saved the horror genre with Halloween, and he was slated for a film that is, from mine and many other Carpenter fans point of view better!!!! The direction is outstanding. It follows the first rule of horror to the hilt and isolates its victims very artistically and gripingly. The special effects are lighters ahead of its time and used, contrary to popular belief, tastefully and well. While it is gory, it is not the gore fest that many would have you believe. If you haven't seen it then you must!!!!!
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
A vampire film that doesn't feel like a vampire film.
This is really two films in one. First it is a crime film with a double act, one of whom is cold and calculating and the other who is sick and deprived but dependent on his partner. Tarintino is all over this film, in particular this part. The sheriff at the beginning is the sheriff in Kill Bill and of course the Tarintino staple dialogue is intoxicating throughout this film. I haven't even mentioned vampires yet!!! That is probably because their presence in the film sneaks up on you like it did to the characters. The two sides to the film is like the two sides of the world that characters experience, one with real life monsters like Seth and Richard Gecko, (Clooney and Tarintino), to the one with monsters from hell, VAMPIRES! My point is that this is the vampire film that doesn't feel like a vampire film. It's like Desperado if it was written by Tarintino and had a few vampires in it. That leads me to my other point. In Robert Rodriguez (director) and Quenten Tarintino (Screenplay Writer) two of the greatest modern film makers combine to make something gritty, a realistic vampire flick. BRILLIANT!!!
Up in Smoke (1978)
One of the funniest films i've ever seen!!!!!
If you like Jay and Silent Bob, you have to watch this film. Cheech and Chong are the blue print for most modern American comedy duo films from the awful Dude Wheres My Car, Harold and Kumar Get the Munchies, the Jay and Silent Bob films and even Bill and Ted. But there's something different about the Cheech and Chong films esp Up in Smoke, they're miles ahead of their modern day counterparts in terms of both the ridiculousness and unbridled comedy genius. Only Kevin Smith (Silent Bob) is capable of writing more clever films as demonstrated by Dogma.
If you think stoner jokes are even remotely funny then you have to see this film, it is the bible of stoner films!! Then you can watch these two crazy geniuses on their wacky adventure that they are only vaguely aware is happening!
The Most Fertile Man in Ireland (2000)
Some funny bits, but I watched it at 2.00AM!
WARNING!!!! THIS MAY SPOIL IT IF YOU Haven'T ALREADY SEEN THIS FILM!!!!I enjoyed this film. It's based in Belfast and I'm from Belfast so a lot of the references that I got wouldn't be understood by all. To me they were having sex in the Albert Clock but to others there's no irony behind that. (The Albert Clock is notorious for prostitutes). The central theme of a man who can impregnate women on the first attempt without fail is hilarious and the fact that his gift is used as a pawn by both sides of our community (like most things are) was well observed. No Oscar winners in this film, it's hardly Shindlers List, but if you're from Northern Ireland or find our situation either funny or pathetic, or if you think the idea of a skinny ginger prostituting himself to loads of middle class women is worth a laugh then why not give it a go.
