The Ballerina (2017)
One of the best for me
We all react differently to plots and pace. I for one have issues keeping my attention fixed if I find a movie is not engaging me. I'm an avid horror/thriller movie fan and this I liked most out of others that I saw recently.
It's a ghost story and the plot is nothing new. But, it's gripping. And, while there may be some inconsistencies if you wanted to be picky, it has suspense, keeps you guessing and it's not relying on special effects to be so. This is not for those that like fast action, gore or slasher movies. It's slower and built more on the storyline than special effects. Think of "A ghost story" type of movie. I really enjoyed it.
Psychomanteum (2018)
So refreshing it cooled me off in this heat!
As a massive horror fan this was a welcome find on a lazy afternoon. I won't give too much away, but if you are into proper suspense, something that actually has a message and is not just simply made of $1000000 chucked at it, well this is something you should watch. As someone else has mentioned, a couple of the stories may be ended too soon. But it is forgivable.
I think I may have to watch it again, there is so much packed in it!
The Evangelist (2017)
How did this get a rating of 7 total? It's terrible.
Ok, I don't like to judge but bad acting is just...bad acting. The plot is ok, but everything else is just what? It's like watching a panto, when people hit each other they just play pretend...and it is obvious.
Avoid, unless you just want something in the background for some noise.
Hallows Eve (2016)
Gripping, old style thriller
OK, so is there better out there? Course there is but, in the end, to me a movie (of any genre) needs to grip my attention and keep me 'interested'. While this is fairly on the same wavelength as'Attack the block' (which I loved too), I appreciate that is low budget and independently made and please keep up the good work!
Mother! (2017)
Is it madness, Purgatory or Dante's Inferno?
OK I loved it. For the first time in a few years I have been gripped to the point of forgetting to breathe. However, as someone else has pointed out, do not expect a silly horror movie that needs no brain power to be watched. This, (like Black Swan) is a masterpiece of metaphors and insinuations. Yes you can just look at the screen an take the images in, the plot, and you will still enjoy it. But it was so intense that a few of us loner cinema goers ended up gathering at he exit exchanging opinions! There is a powerful message here, only you can get what it is, and I feel that it may be different from one another. What I gathered from it (only my opinion) is the never ending battle between good and evil. Forgiveness and revenge. But you can decide once you see it. The consensus was that it is intense and makes you think (yay, finally!), try go deeper than the images and the words. I myself may watch it again.
A Ghost Story (2017)
Enjoyable, true, sad and happy all at once
Upon reading about this movie I was fascinated. The realms of loss, grief, life and death, is very much one that interests me on many different aspects. And this movie touches them all. While I think I may have to watch it again ( a couple of bits I may need to understand better) I thought it was great, well directed and greatly acted. Both actors express their emotions really well, especially M. The director touches upon very sensitive subjects with tact, poetry, a little sadness and wit. I think to truly enjoy this movie you need to step away from the usual action/ghosts/camera/footage stories. This is not just about a ghost, it is about all of us. About humanity.
Starry Eyes (2014)
Brilliant and refreshing, True horror is back
I rented the wrong movie this evening in error and got peeved, so searched for another and found this and thought...oh OK sounds like my kind of thing. And I was blown away. As other reviewers have mentioned Dario Argento would be proud. This is what a true horror fan wants to see in my view. Great camera shots, great acting from the main lead and the atmosphere was simply creepy and superb. There is no pretense, no all over CGI, it is all about acting and atmosphere and leaving you with what it could be or not be. Well, it is obvious what it is about...or is it? Who is the producer really? And who are they all? I am so going to buy this film and watch it again. This movie tries and succeeds in creating a Suspiria like atmosphere. it makes you wonder till the end what is going to happen. Anyway, i shall stop rambling on. Give it a go if you like true horror :).
