Three Sons (1939)
Excellent Movie....
I caught Three Sons on TMC one morning and really enjoyed the movie. Edward Ellis as the father and J. Edward Bromberg deliver strong and sincere performances. The story line of four children, three sons and one daughter and how their father unintentionally spoiled them, is not unique but still holds interest. The Father rescues his children and protects them through their troubles and tribulations but they turn on him and sell him out. All except one... Freddie who you can tell has a good heart and is the "Prodigal Son". I was cheering for him at the end and his reconciliation with his father is heartwarming. Made in 1939 I suppose this film was somewhat lost in the large number of wonderful movies of that year. Perhaps the greatest year in the history of the cinema. It deserves watching for it's fine acting performances and good story line.
This Property Is Condemned (1966)
This movie made in 1966
holds up very well. The cast is excellent. Look for a young Robert Blake as one of Alva's admirers, of which there are many. Mary Badham shows how natural and good a child actress she truly was and that her performance in Mockingbird was not just a flash in the pan. I wish she had done more. Charles Bronson is fine as Hazel's boyfriend who is in lust with Wood's character. I think the plot is fine, not sure why so much criticism. It develops the characters and moves along just fine. Robert Redford is solid in his role. He struggles with his job and morality. That is never easy. But Natalie Wood is outstanding. Not only her screen presence is mesmerizing, but her interpretation of her role is a revelation. She is no innocent, yet she is innocent and she portrays that very well. She has never been more beautiful and to me she rivaled Elizabeth Taylor in looks. She was not nominated for an Academy Award that year, but I believe she she deserved it.
Romeo and Juliet (1968)
The genius of Shakespeare and Zefferilli
are evident in this movie. An almost perfect movie (in spite of some editing from the original play) with stunning performances by Hussey and Whiting and the supporting cast. How this movie failed to win Best Picture and Olivia Hussey the best actress is beyond me. The score is outstanding to boot. It still has the power to affect my emotions although I have seen it several times. It is hard to imagine that it was made 45 years ago. If you have not seen the film as of yet, you will not be disappointed. It is a revelation. The director has captured the mood of the time and the intent of the playwright. I highly recommend this version of Romeo and Juliet. I give it my highest rating.
