Hercules (2014)
The Rock is Herrrcullllllessss!
Here's a good example of a movie that you shouldn't make assumptions just from watching the trailer and maybe do a bit of research first. I was really hoping for a special effect laden film filled with CGI monster fights that had epic demigod versus mythical creatures."Clash of the Titans" and its sequel "Wrath of the Titans" have proved that audiences like watching fantasy/adventure films. I felt so misled. This film actually wants to do the opposite. Here's a film that wants you to know the truth behind the legend and the myth. So, I was a bit disappointed. I was even getting a bit annoyed at how ridiculous the violence was in this film. I felt at lost on what, was happening. I then realized that there is a team dynamic in this latest retelling of the Hercules saga. I find it quite endearing that in his travels, Hercules had gathered people who were in one way or another shared his fate, to wonder the lands in search of purpose and redemption. In a way, Hercules had somewhat created a makeshift family to replaced the one that he lost. Once that was established, the film got more entertaining and the interaction between the characters got more interesting. Waiting for the end credits, I now know that this version of Hercules was based on a graphic novel. And, so everything made sense and the purpose was clear in the making of this film. I had always done research on the films that I watch, based on the actors, directors, movie genre and subject matter. Knowing what previous Hercules films and legends were about, I made the mistake for assuming that it was the same for this one. I was so wrong, but glad that this has reminded me time and time again not to jump onto conclusions. On a good note, Dwayne Johnson's version of Hercules is by far the most closest to the likeness of the mythical legend that we all know and familiar with.
Earth to Echo (2014)
Earth to Echo,Echo,echo
To those who want to watch 'Earth to Echo', please be informed that this is a vertigo inducing film due to it's constant 'shakiness'. This is another film that makes use of the 'found-footage' genre and incorporating it with visual images from using GoPro-like cameras. Those who often play 'Counterstrike' video games might not experience the same thing. Here we have a film that brings back memories from watching those classic late 80's and early 90's sci-fi films. 'Earth to Echo' has a lot of elements borrowed from other films like 'E.T', 'Batteries Not Included', 'Flight of the Navigator' and 'Short Circuit and maybe a bit of 'Monsters Squad' thrown in as well. Now imagine the film being shown through a shaky camera lens ala 'Cloverfield' and 'Chronicle'. And there you have it
.an adventure science fiction film starring a group of teenagers on a quest to help an extraterrestrial find its way home, seen through the camera lens of one of the kid who happens to have a habit of filming his surroundings and posting them on Youtube. So, if you feel like watching a feel good family flick and have immunity to shaky camera work then this is definitely a movie for you.
The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
No Fault In These Stars
I was so prepared to cry myself ugly but thank goodness that didn't happen after watching 'The Fault in Our Stars'. This film is definitely for die hard fans of the novel and for those who yearns for an unconventional, coming of age, romantic comedy drama film. I have not read the book but watching this film makes me feel that I ought to. I would definitely understand fans who would silently mouth the words of their beloved characters, whenever Gus or Hazel speaks out lines from the novel. My most favorite scene is also the most saddest part of the film. Audiences may have expected, Shailene Woodley to deliver one of her best performance yet but Ansel Elgort, the guy who portrays Augustus Waters brings such warmth and vulnerability to his character that one might be unable to help themselves but wish to have a friend just like Gus. So for those who love romantic dramedy with a twist, this is definitely the movie for you.
Deliver Us from Evil (2014)
Deliver Us From This....
After 'Oculus', I was craving for more supernatural horror films and was hoping that 'Deliver us From Evil' would well
deliver. Unfortunately, this film felt more like a TV series about a police detective who partners up with a priest to combat the evil that was threatening their city. Now this film was based on actual accounts by retired NYPD police officer, Ralph Sarchie and knowing that it was based on true accounts, I was ready to be scared. That didn't really happen though but it did manage to induce a few laughs not because of the movie, but by a lady who seems to jump every time something pops up on screen. There were a few scary moments though, but that does not warrant any lasting impression. I think this film should have been a TV show but I we already got that with 'Supernatural'. A TV movie perhaps
anyways, with the predictable storyline aside, both Eric Bana and Edger Ramirez were very engaging as two men who seems to hold dark secrets of their own which were the only thing that fuels me to watch the movie until the end. So for those who were expecting 'The Exorcist' or 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose', please watch this movie only for your comparison.
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
Transformers : The Age of Dinobots and Strong Female Characters
You will definitely know that the season of the Big Summer Box Office Blockbuster Movies has arrived with the premiere of the latest installment of the Transformers movie franchise, Transformers: Age of Extinction. This time the story takes place 5 years after the last Transformer film. So there's no Shia Lebouf or Josh Duhamel. Mark Wahlberg takes the male human lead and portrays a down on his luck inventor who is also a single father to his teenage daughter, who has a secret boyfriend which is sure to create some tension when the Dad finds out. Anyways, movie is almost 3 hours long so be prepared with a bottled water and some sustenance and a visit to the toilet beforehand if you want to seat yourself throughout the whole movie. The Dinobots makes an appearance this time around to the delight of fans of the classic U.S Transformers cartoon and with the addition of 3 strong female characters, that might suggest a more equal presentation for both sexes, may appeal to a wider audience then the male demographic. Like its predecessors, it's special effect galore with cool cars and trucks and even cooler action sequences. But the action this time is more 'tight' compared to the first few films which was a bit hard to focus on, since the action was like all over place. This film is definitely for those who enjoy watching giant alien robots kicking each other's butt in 3D.
Maleficent (2014)
More Films Like 'Maleficent' Please
For those who are into the movie fairy tale craze right now, look no further because Maleficent will definitely be your cup of tea
and then some. Angelina Jolie delivers one of the most interesting performances ever portraying the titled character. Based on Disney's Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent is one of the most iconic villains ever to grace the screens during its classic run in the late 50's. This time Maleficent takes center stage as the main character which shows us what lead her to proclaimed herself as the Mistress of All Evil. Don't get confuse with the whole fairy with angel wings though, but do enjoy the rich visuals and fantastic creatures shown in this film. I've seen my fair share of winged characters in other films before and met with either disappointment or mediocre response but none had offer so far, one of the most breath taking flight sequence I had ever seen. In this film, Maleficent loves flying and she shows it. Don't get too surprise if you catch a moment of Maleficent in superhero mode. Her means for this were well justified. So for those of you who enjoyed watching 'Mirror Mirror', 'Snow White and the Huntsman' and 'Alice in Wonderland' this is definitely the movie to get your fairy tale fix.
