My ten-point scale on this website works as follows: I am 100% subjective. I consider how the aesthetics, direction, and screenplay affect me, placing extra emphasis on philosophical value. I have a more difficult time giving genre films 9's or 10's for this reason...I admire creativity. A film such as 'Alien' gets a ten in my mind because I could not imagine a greater science-fiction horror - 'Alien' is the apex of the genre. Then there are comedy films. There is no doubt that the Marx Brothers had fairly average directors, and that perhaps on an objective scale (if such a thing exists) their films are not all that good. I however consider them absolutely brilliant, but nonetheless I believe that I only gave two of them 10 stars: 'A Night At the Opera' and 'Duck Soup'.
I consider my grades fair. Also, I bask in the idea that I could change any of them (or most of them) at the drop of a hat (or, the viewing of a film).
*I don't give many poor reviews because I rarely watch movies that I could consider poor before watching them. There are exceptions, but I try to stick to directors and themes that I enjoy.
