Tom yum goong 2 (2013)
A slight step below the original Tom Yum Goong
I've been anticipating this movie for quite some time. I enjoyed most of Tony Jaa's earlier films (except Ong Bak 2 / 3, which I felt had great action but the plot was lacking). Having read many negative reviews about Tom Yum Goong 2, I came into this viewing with lowered expectations.
Now that I've had a chance to see it for myself, I will say that the plot and acting aren't the highlights of this film. The main bad guy in this film is very poorly acted by Rze and his motivations seem very cliché.
The action scenes are really what this movie is about and TYG2 delivers with several satisfying scenes. It's a mixed bag though as I'd say 60% of the action scenes are really well choreographed and on par with Tony Jaa's earlier work while the other 40% contains pretty poor fighting (slow and pretty amateurish; something you'd find on some dude's Youtube channel).
In Conclusion, I'd definitely recommend this to any martial arts fans as there is a fair amount of good fighting scenes in TYG2.
For casual movie goers, they may not be as forgiving as I was when judging this movie. The ridiculous storyline and poor acting may be too much to bear for inconsistent action.. so I'd have to give this movie a 6 / 10.
