The Card Counter (2021)
Slow walk thru the night.
I do not like what I saw but I am glad I did.
This gripping slow brooding drama will probably haunt me for a while.
I' ll spoil it: it's about torturing people, it's about the system instituted by the US through out the world, it's about the people who participated in it.
One scene in particular, if one cares to open one' s mind and soul, was especially disturbing and made me ashamed of being where I am while this kind of horror takes place.
I was really surprised, in this day of control by power that be, that this kind of movie could see the light of day, proving that there is a glimmer of hope somewhere and that all is not lost in our 1984 era.
Just see it.
Open your souls.
Trigger Point (2021)
Hidden gem
Barry Pepper is in every scene and the it feels like a first person story. The spectator is more an actor here.
Barry is one of those SO good actors, who have it all, but never get first billing.
Well, he has his chance here and he delivers: he and Colm Feore carry this film.
The 82 minutes runtime (really 79) seemed more like 100 minutes, in a good way. That tells you about how well each scene in developed.
Kudos to the director and the writer.
All and all, a fine job.
This is not for the casual viewer half checking the screen and half checking the iPhone, their 3,4 or 5 rating being accurate estimation of their attention span.
Modern viewer beware.
Out of Time (2021)
A blast from the past.
Pun intended. This time travel story is reminiscent of The Twilight Zone or the Outer Limits (original series)... Simple idea, simple story, pure nostalgia.
The kind of stuff you didn't know you missed.
Much better than all the contemporary S-F blockbusters.
A breath of fresh air.
Debris (2021)
The best true SF show in years.
The Expanse is good, but it's a Space Opera à la Star Wars or Star Trek.
This is more the Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, Ray Bradbury type: so few explosions or guns... The action lies in the concept and in the relationships between the characters.
Top notch acting, great production values - and no freaking WOKE pretensions, make this a MUST SEE.
Much too well thought and intelligent for its own good, it's a flawless piece of storytelling.
It won't last, obviously.
The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020)
This is so good...
Great photography and production values on a low budget that doesn't look like it.
Jim Cummings does it all: writing, directing, acting. This kind of hat trick rarely does well. But here... The story is compelling because it is character driven, and there is a nice mystery road to follow.
Kudos to Jim Cummings. I'll be checking on the guy: he's got a(some) great career(s) awaiting him.
Jeepers Creepers 3 (2017)
A worthy contribution to the Jeepers Creepers' canon. What'wrong with you???
Good acting and good production values. Nice photography. Good direction. This third instalment brings new new knowledge as to what the creature really is.
Well sorta.
The story is refreshing and the plot original.
I really enjoyed this and I am still scratching my head about all the 1 to 4-5 evaluations. Makes me wonder: aren't those critics rating their view of the world rather than the world itself?
Hmm...
The Devil All the Time (2020)
Needs patience: 30 minutes too long but still very good.
Let's face it: most Netflix produced movie have a cheap patina.
Not this one: it is on par with top notch productions.
The story feels contrived and the runtime is too long. There is a difference between "slow burning" and "not getting to the point". I almost lost patience at times. The story makes little sense: each scene seems to have the sole purpose of getting you to the next scene.
Who writes this stuff? Don't believe that because it quacks and walks like a duck, it must be a duck. Story telling is much more than that.
But the cast was so good that it almost made up for it.
Tome Holland appears around 45-46 minutes into the movie and you readily see that the guy has got it all... What an actor... He literately carries the film from that point on.
Production values: 8. Acting: 9. Story 4. Holland: 9.5
Night Hunter (2018)
Rich unconventionnal story.
Full of great actors who play minor roles which makes you scratch your head and wonder: they must have gotten in this film for a personal reason!
Great story. Unpredictable.
You'll spend a good time.
Another thing that kept me scratching my head: why the bad critics? Because dogs get killed?
Ha! That might be it. In fact, it's the only reason I find.
Kill Chain (2019)
Exquisite film noir thriller
Wonderful.
The acting is spot on. The direction, montage, production values: top notch.
There are stories within the story. Full of twists, it never gets you guessing though because you don't have the time to think. Things keep happening. There are lots of WTF moments but all gets clarified in the end.
It works like a charm.
Great to see Cage doing good work.
How can this be a 5???
This has all the elements to become a cult classic.
Line of Duty (2019)
A hell of a rollercoaster ride.
Aaron Eckhart and Giancarlo Esposito, what's not to like about this movie?
Non-stop action and non-stop observations about the world we live in - both on the funny and more serious side.
Great one-liners and tongue and cheek humour.
Everything I wish for in a movie: original plot, some life lessons and, ah yes, redemption.
I loved every minute of it.
Crown Vic (2019)
The New Centurions in 2019
The New Centurions was filmed in 1972.
So yes, this kind of movie comes once around every 47 years (?). It is that good. Gritty, honest, with some glimmers of hope in the darkness.
Thomas Jane (who should be first billed) and Luke Kleintank (great performance) made this quite a "ride".

Primal (2019)
Enjoyable guilty pleasure
Not so bad. An enjoyable B movie ride.
I am a fan of both Cage and Durand. I think they both enjoyed acting in this movie. It shows. And Famke Janssen does show good chemistry with Cage while not having not much to do. But she does stand in all of her scenes.
I found myself smiling most of the time.
Just a bunch of good actors in a not so bad story enjoying each other. This is not Oscar stuff of course. But, hey, nobody was looking for high standards here.
Fun.
