Wade in the Water (2019)
A vigilante's road to redemption
This is a very cool indie movie about a man who discovers a dark secret and decides to take the law into his own hands. It very much has a "Blue Ruin" feel. It's almost darkly funny throughout. The two lead actors play off of each other well, and Danika Golombek especially is a talent to watch. This film really wowed me, highly recommended.
The Painted Warrior (2019)
Powerful story of artistry and endurance
A captivating documentary that tells the story of one man and his struggle to push himself to his limits. It's also a moving story of a husband and wife team who have to overcome their own demons in order to achieve greatness. Stephen Sinek, the Painted Warrior, competes in obstacle races covered in vibrant, intricate body paint. He's painted by his talented wife Aeni, who treats him as a canvas to explore all kinds of beautiful, meaningful imagery. With this body-transforming art, Sinek becomes something bigger than himself. But the Painted Warrior pushes himself to his breaking point. He and Aeni must regroup in order to achieve their biggest challenge yet. A really beautiful film.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
disappointing
I was a huge fan of the original Jurassic Park, and I'm a huge fan of Spielberg, and maybe my increased expectations made it that much worse. This movie is darker (no complaints with that), but not as effective. Maybe there are just too many characters that we don't have much emotional connection with. It certainly suffers from what some refer to as "Spielberg Sequelitis," as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom did. I also read the book, which I feel was much better...the changes they made didn't help, and the ending with the dinosaur in the city felt tacked on. Some scenes were great (particularly the raptors running through the fields), while others were terribly cheesy (the gymnast swinging and kicking a raptor? Come on!). Still better than Jurassic World, though.
