Army of the Dead (2021)
Can Zack Snyder please stop making movies
I knew as soon as I saw that it was 2.5 hours long that this was not going to be a good film. Despite numerous actions scenes the overall pacing seemed slow, a lot of scenes dragged on and there was so much unnecessary chit chat between characters you couldn't care less about! Most of the characters were completely unmemorable and all of them made bizarre decisions throughout. The action scenes were comics but not in a good way and the zombies were stupid - the screeching and costumes were annoying and ridiculous. The plot went something like...bio weapon escapes army convoy (due to stupidity) billionaire recruits random soldier to put team together to retrieve his millions from a safe (his insurance had already covered the money and he knew everything about the vault except the combination???) movie spends ages introducing random characters and planning heist (of which we end up seeing very little) team enter Vegas with annoying volunteer girl from refugee camp who wants to find a missing woman who she ends up not even caring if she lives or dies. Then there's screeching fancy dress zombies, a bad cgi tiger, some weird zombie congregation to turn the perve guy who was offered as a sacrifice into a zombie who makes a 10 second appearance towards the end. Most of the characters die pointless deaths and then a helicopter crash which the annoying girl survives without a scratch and a man emerging from the vault into a nuclear zone with no problems... I love zombie movies and shows but this was just trash from start to finish. I don't think Zack Snyder should be allowed to make movies anymore.
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Absolutely terrible
My husband and I are massive fans of scary movies and also big fans of horror movies set in England or olden times. This movie was hailed as one of the best horrors of recent years in some of the reviews I read so I was excited to watch it. It was, without a doubt, one of the worst movies I have ever watched. Boring plot which didn't really make much sense or have a point, terrible acting and annoying, completely unlikable characters and a barely audible script. The only saving grace was that it was only 1.5 hours long rather than the 2.5 hours which most films seem to be nowadays. By the end of the film we were so frustrated to have wasted our evening on such a disappointing pile of rubbish. If you want to spend 1.5 hours struggling to understand a word anyone is saying, waiting for anything remotely scary to happen and praying that the characters all die very soon then watch this. If you want a movie that's intelligent, scary and interesting then don't bother.
Extinction (2015)
Not massively original but still worth watching
In recent years I have really struggled to come across a zombie horror movie which really interested me. This movie is not the most original I have ever seen and it is relatively predictable however I did still find myself entertained through 90% of the film. The characters were, for the most part, likable and it had some tense moments. The 'zombie' design was not very original but creepy nonetheless. The acting was decent and the setting was interesting. As the movie went on I felt it comparable to the likes of 'I am Legend', 'The Descent' and 'Signs'. All of which I consider pretty good movies so I wasn't too bothered about the obvious similarities. All in all I felt it was an hour and a half well spent and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of this genre.
