Donaire y Esplendor (2017)
Romeo and Juliet from Las Tablas
Donaire y Esplendor is a fresh and folkloric comedy about the "collective madness" better known as Carnaval in Panama. This film narrates the story about two youngers who fall deeply in love in a small town called Las Tablas, Los Santos province in Panama. Nothing special about this except for the fact that She belongs to "Calle Abajo" and he belongs to "Calle Arriba" (Yes, Down Street and Up Street) maybe this doesn't mean nothing to you.. well let me explain: basically if you belong to any of the streets you must hate people who belong the other street, annually every Street chooses their Carnaval Queen and a full machinery of people works for creates the best costumes, carriages, fireworks, tonadas (kind of songs against the other queen and their family and subjects)etc, etc etc. They fundraise money during all the year and prepare to celebrate during four days until the two Queens confront each other with their subjects in the main event that's called "El Topón". This is a strong tradition that have been practiced during many many years even some families have generations of queens like a monarchy. That's why is a Romeo and Juliet story because their love is just impossible. The movie is starring by a well looked, beautiful couple: sometimes they have chemistry sometimes not much but doesn't care "Esplendor" (Paul Voeller) is so handsome and "Donaire" (Gaby Garrido) have a lot of charisma, but for me the main dish and the great surprise of the movie was the mothers, the actresses who play the mothers are Analia (Gaby Gnazzo) and Vanesa (Lorna Cepeda) they steal the show! Both of them are obsessed with the traditions and Carnaval and they will do the necessary for separate their children. The rest of cast contributes to recreate this little madness and how is to live in a little town where everyone knows about everyone's life. Gaby Gnazzo maybe has the two strongest moments of the film (people clap in cinema every time) and how forget the incredibly speech of Lorna Cepeda, Carnaval is about work, love and passion, tears and blood! For any panamanian this movie is a must, even if you don't like carnaval, foreigns are going to laugh because of the unusual of the situations and with luck maybe you would like to visit us and you want to celebrate some Carnaval in Las Tablas.
Mother! (2017)
Mother! Applies for everything in life!
I must start saying that never seen the trailer or was interested in this movie. I really don't like JL as actress but I feel grateful to have seen this movie. Mother! is a movie who can overwhelm you, start with this couple you don't know who they are or where they are, but step by step you could relate with any of them. She is home and he is he. He is a writer who can't write because of lack of inspiration. She supports him in every way she could, she covers her own needs with work. One day a bunch of strangers arrive to their home and things go wrong. After that everything goes in a madly spiral of metaphors and symbolisms and every person would read it in their own ways. This movie applies for everything in life, for the people who still dream and have the sparkle of life in them, for the creators, the artist, the egocentrics, for the mothers, people who loves too much (and give everything of them) and people who only love their self, and the list goes and goes. Nothing is enough and never will be. I cried, I almost scream, I feel so attached to her, it a was a hurricane of emotions. At the end I laugh so hard that some persons in the cinema look at me like a mad. Some people just get out of the theater, it is not for everybody. You can interpret this movie in thousands of ways and that's really beautiful overall in this times.
3 metros sobre el cielo (2010)
Great Romantic Movie with a Fair Finale
This movie is for romantics, a cheesy charming film, with lots of clichés and Coca- Colas shots. I love almost every frame created and color graded so sweet and magical that constantly make you think about how does it feel being in love or better said the pureness of the first love. But if you are an adult you know for sure that this kind of relations never found a happy ending in real life... well for my surprise neither in this film. H have a lot of issues especially angry issues and Babi is a teenager in love, when the movie goes on is most visible, for H is very easy to make bad decisions, his constantly lack of self-control and is easy to conclude that eventually his going to be abusive to her. My three favorites moments were their first ride, the disco encounter and when he slaps her, the look in her face. Only thing I don't enjoy so much the over musicalization, in some moments was OK but eventually become too much. I really enjoy this movie because when you're in love is difficult accept reality you want to believe in love or in the power of love, but reality eventually hits you in the face, like in this movie at the end everything just goes away.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)
Surprisingly a Lovely movie!
Well, first time for accident I saw the trailer I was shocked, I used to really love Jane Austen's adaptation movies, because love her work. But this was different and trailer was kind of too much for me.
Nevertheless, I felt curiosity about it. And then I saw it. I must confess that I had seen "Pride and Prejudice"'s Joe Wright (2005) like thousands of times and zombies don't bother me so why not? well the movie was just Lovely! Seen this girls as a powerful warriors, seen our beloved Lizzie fight it against zombies without fear, with grace and elegance was great! There are some things make me doubt but is refreshing, have some action, some brains and of course Mr. Darcy the personification of charming prince doesn't disappoint is sexy in his own way.
The landscapes are beautiful, some great actors around and zombies are OK. It's not the movie that will change your life but if you are a big fan you're going to smile you'll thrill every time Mr. Darcy and Lizzie's eyes meet and with every interaction. it doesn't matter if are zombies, plants, aliens or whatever. This is one of the biggest love stories of all times.
