Dune: Part Two (2024)
great visuals, but unsatisfying, disappointing, contradictory
I was really looking forward to see this movie. I liked the first one and the old one from 1984. I don't want to say that, but the film is a fart in the wind instead of a thunder.
Like Villeneuve's Bladerunner 2049 the optics and style are awesome, However the characters and plot give the impression of depth where is none in the end. The same disappointment when the movie comes to it's conclusion. The fact there might be a part 3 does not change that.
What are the big flaws of Dune part two? Paul is shown as humble and only wants to help. He is aware of the dangers of beeing a messiah only to go full megalomania once he drinks the water of life. And the final battle is underwhelming. No real struggle to win, no clever descissions to turn the tide, no new weapons or ships to see. Other characters are even worse. - Yes the emperor is supposed to be weak, but he is so dull that it's impossible to belive he made it to such a high age in this position. - Vladimir Harkonnen was dangerous and terrifying in part one. Now he is shown to be strangely submissive when facing a joke of an emperor and his nephew who might become his successor. That doesn't fit his character at all. - Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen has to fight drugged opponents in the colosseum and a doctor, suddenly he is the big scary final boss? - The Fremen were the good guys where Paul was supposed to grow together with and fight for them to give them a better future. Now it feels like they are nothing more like some native tribe who is manipulated with witchcraft to be a tool of power for the next emperor.
There are several other points, but these are the most important reasons why the pretty pictures are not enough to make this film satisfying to watch.
Like John Carter of Mars. Nice to see, but so very meh at the end..
Insidious: The Red Door (2023)
well done horror movie
Great horror movie. It does what it's supposed to do, scare the viewer.
I had a girl with me in the theatre and most of the time she had her eyes closed and her nails into my arm.
The horror scenes had jump scare and gruesome elements at the same time. Usually in other movies after a scary moment there is some time for relief. When things are back to normal for a while until it's getting darker again. Not in this movie. The time to take a breath was often pretty short and gave you more stress and horror.
The story around was well written and actually made me like the characters more to the end.
I don't know what some other people expect from a good horror movie. Maybe they are just way too cool to be scared and everything is boring in their mind.
Anyway I can recommend the movie if you like scary films.
Castlevania (2017)
Torture to watch
I really wanted to enjoy this show, but it's just so aweful. The maincharacter started out somewhat interesting - unpredictable and strong. But like pretty much all 2020s male heroes he is shown to be incompetent and a fool. His companions outsmart and outpower him by far and look down on him most of the time. So what about the main villain? Even worse! Dracula is a total whimp. He has some powers yes, but he is dumb, has no charimsa and commands no respect to anybody. Nobody fears him. He is not leading his forces, asks for help all the time and just sits on a chair moping around over his lost love. All characters in this show are painfully one dimensional. They have a minimum of a backstory and that's all they talk about and explains 100% of what they do. The dialogs are dull at first and get more and more annyoing until it's nothing but torture. The writing for the show can be best discribed by what a 15 year old would think off as homework over the weekend. Low low efford. So does the action gonna save the show - no. The action scenes are rare
and short and get boring pretty fast. It's usually a slash resulting in body parts to come off.
