Last Christmas (2019)
For Christmas Eve with a drink
Yes it's cheesy but Christmas films are meant to be. Great performances from all involved especially Emma Thompson as mother. Even better if you're a George Michael fan .
The Beatles: Get Back (2021)
Golden
Fascinating to watch. To see how it really was. To see them having fun most of the time. To feel sorry for George when he can't be heard. To see Ringo just go along with it all. To see the 'hangers on' gawping at the greatest band there will ever be.
Sure, too long for the casual fan but they can skip through to what we've all been waiting for - the full rooftop performance.
All polished amazingly by Mr Jackson.
The Sparks Brothers (2021)
They still seem European !
Always thought they were German and with a name like Mael you can forgive me. Even after seeing this film it still seems so to me.
The film is a comprehensive fun anthology of the band. Full of humour like their lyrics and an impressive array of talking heads. Yes, it long but it needs to be!
Prometheus (2012)
Almost a parody?
Whilst nothing will ever touch the first two Alien movies I did enjoy this film. The plot is acceptable but some moments are plainly just silly. Good performances throughout. I guess our main enjoyment was seeing the start of how we get to the original first movie.
Engrenages (2005)
Must watch French crime series
I think it's the lovable yet vulnerable characters that make this show. Storylines in all series have always been current and believable. Just sad that we've just watched the last ever episode/series that there will be and I'll miss these folks so much especially Laure.
Mank (2020)
Watch Citizen Kane First
Found it helped knowing the characters that Mank might have based his on for the screenplay for Citizen Kane.
Great black and white photography and performances throughout.
The Serpent (2021)
The Price of Obsession !
Very strong dramatisation of this serial killer's antics certainly helped by the dramatic locations he visited. Great performances from all involved who were made to resemble the real characters impressively.
The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (2020)
Great documentary
This documentary highlights how big the Bee Gees were even before Saturday Night Fever and is all the better for it. Covers all the band's bases except for You Win Again which is strange. It very cleverly presents interviews with Maurice and Robin as if they were recent. Ultimately sad in the end obviously with 3 of the brothers (inc Andy)having passed.
Das singende, klingende Bäumchen (1957)
Pure Nostalgia
Freaked me out as a kid and I'm now 61. Thoroughly enjoyed rewatching as did my wife who had never seen it before.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Brilliant second series
10 for the 2nd series. As a 60 year old Original Series fan I loved the interaction with the OS characters and storyline and just about to start 3rd series.
La vita davanti a sé (2020)
Lovely, believable story
Wasn't put off by the English dubbing which I assume is done by the original actors. Great to see Sophia Loren again too..
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
You need to be aware of history !!!
People are going to see this without being aware of who Sharon Tate or The Manson Family were and then reporting there's no plot. When you know this history you realise precisely what the plot is and understand the film's title.
