6 Souls (2010)
Degree In Sociology, Anyone?
Frighteningly enough, I understand what the script writer was trying to accomplish when he was crafting "6 Souls," I really do. Unfortunately, while it is an enjoyable thriller/horror film, you need a minor in sociology and history to understand some of the elements of the film and where the mythology of the backdrop becomes difficult to understand.
The storyline becomes a bit convoluted without an understanding of several non-traditional practices such as Hex magic, Appalachian conjuration (and it's dark twin, non-Wiccan witchcraft, so please, don't shoot the messenger on this one) and soul riding. That being said, either the screen writer knows too much about these subjects or too little, resulting in a confusing mish-mash for those who haven't any idea about the landscape that forms the background for this tale.
However, if the viewer can move beyond the limitations of the film (in short, too many elements that would have individually made an excellent thriller), the movie is enjoyable and a good way to spend an afternoon if the viewer is in the mood for a thriller. Just realize that as a viewer, you will, in all likelihood, have to suspend disbelief until the credits roll.
That being said, Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are excellent in their characterizations even if there are some aspects of the film that completely derail from anything that is familiar within circles of the occult (try a search engine if you don't believe me). The cast is excellent, even if the script is about as realistic as finding a zombie using your toothbrush one morning in your bathroom.
Ironically, were the screen writer to focus on a prequel to the film, many of these elements would be answered and as a sequel, "6 Souls" would be a fascinating sequel.
Dark Hearts (2014)
Edgy Indie Film!
Taking the road less traveled, "Dark Hearts" is an edgy indie film that explores the dynamics of love and hate, creation and destruction in a modern subculture that is reminiscent of the salons in Paris during the 18th century. Set against the backdrop of the postmodern minefield of the contemporary urban landscape, the heady mixture results in a cocktail that takes the viewer through a psychological labyrinth rarely found in mainstream film. The performances are excellent and provide insight to the shadows and light that make the characters come alive with a gritty realism against an nearly surreal backdrop. This film is a must see for thrillers that travel off the beaten path!
