Anyone But You (2023)
Yikes....
Unfortunately, this is what happens when you prioritize looks over a good script and talent. The lack of depth, even for a romcom was staggering. It was basically let's put Sydney in something fast because people think she's hot. I honestly don't remember anybody in the theatre laughing. Too bad because it has been a while since there has been a good romantic comedy and I think theatres are going to do well this summer. It honestly gets a little uncomfortable how often they show off Sydney's chest. We get it, she has a nice body, can we move on? The scene in the coffee shop feels so inauthentic. Nobody acts like that. It's a romcom and if your characters' first meeting feels forced and contrived then you're doomed already. Nobody on planet earth would do what the male character did. It makes no sense.
Frankie Drake Mysteries (2017)
Seriously Bad
This attempts to tick every single stereotypical box. Congrats. Instead of worrying about story and characters this typically Canadian crap is full of colloquialisms and unwatchable drivol. It has to be a woman with a man's name to prove she's one of the boys. She has to be beautiful, but tough at the same time. She's quirky but surprisingly intelligent. She's underestimated by men but can have a scotch with the rest of them. There has to be an overweight female and a a person with a different skin colour for inclusion. Take some hints from a great series like Orange is the New Black. It is a great story, with complicated characters and relationships. This is fluff that thinks if you throw in expressions from the 20s you'll have a great show.
S.E. Cupp Unfiltered (2017)
Lazy journalist
Sorry, it's just bad. Feigned intellectualism at its finest. This holier than thou attitude makes me cringe. She never paid her dues as a journalist and just married a far older, connected guy. The guests are just as bad and seem to fawn over her. Option journalists are just lazy journalists. Put the work in and report facts.
Kim's Convenience (2016)
paint by numbers
Such a tired, old premise. The fish out of water, new to a country parents with their "hip" kids. The obvious set it up, knock it down joke telling is enough to make me want to gouge my eyes out. Every scene, set it up, knock it down. The latest promo, the guy invites his sister and new friend over for "basketball Sunday"...didn't know there was such a thing...and the buddy says "noooo, it's nacho Sunday, you should have asked" so the guy asks him if he minds and the biiiiig punch line, "YES I do mind"....oh the laughs.... Someone asked Seinfeld what made his and Larry's writing so different. he said, "We basically looked around at what everyone else was doing and decided not to do that." This show looks at every little thing formulaic comedy does and is doing that.
2 Broke Girls (2011)
Probably the worst show that has ever been on TV
Why is there no rating below awful? Nothing to do with the actors. They never had a chance with writing like this. You can't even have it on in the background....it actually makes me angry. The set 'em up, knock 'em down barrage of garbage jokes is offensive to my brain. It's funny, you know a show is bad when a Canadian network decides to pick it up. My Canadian friends use that as a barometer for horrible shows. The purchasers are known for getting cheap, terrible shows for their money- starved networks. It is 100% the writing. Kat is a good actress in other things, but it really makes you wonder who makes these decisions at major networks. I think it has just been canceled so perhaps the universe is re-aligning.
