Dimension 404 (2017)
404 Error: Entertainment Not Found
I was excited to hear that Hulu was creating a show that was being compared to the Twilight Zone and Black Mirror. Hulu's original programming has been hit or miss but I had hope! Then I heard Mark Hammill was narrating: Bonus Points! But in the same moment I saw that it was being created by Rocketjump. Points lost. I haven't enjoyed anything they produced.
Still, I was determined to give it a shot.
From the first scene I could tell it was not what it had been compared to. The lighting immediately gave it the feel of a sit-com of sorts, the soundtrack seems outright silly for the genre they were attempting to be a part of.
The acting left much to be desired, the writing seemed even worse. It's as if they had ideas for 10-15 minute shows and stretched it out into 45. No, I was not impressed but I felt like it would be unfair to judge it without watching the first 3 episodes.
Cut to 2 1/2 hours later and you have a disappointed person wishing for that part of their life back.
The Twilight Zone and Black Mirror are thought provoking, edgy, interesting... Dimension 404 is cheesy, uninteresting and generally boring.
Do yourself a favor and watch something else.
The Bastard Executioner (2015)
This is how 'The Bastard Executioner' got it's greenlight
That's the only way I can figure out how this bad of a show is given a prime time spot. Here's how the conversation went...
SUTTER: I've got an idea for a new show! FX EXECS: Awesome! Sons of Anarchy was great! Lets hear what ya got! SUTTER: You know Game of Thrones. Well it's like that but not interesting. When it begins to get REALLY dull and predictable we'll just toss in the most edgy violence we can get away with on FX.
FX EXEC: Um okay... do you have a script or plans for an interesting plot? Maybe intriguing characters? SUTTER: Nope! We're gonna wing it. And when the 'plot' turns really dull we'll just toss in some grisly torture.
FX EXEC: You're kidding, right? No plot? SUTTER: We will... I know! We'll make a power vacuum and characters will be scurrying to fill it. That'll hold it up! FX EXEC: Well, at least the characters will be interesting, right? SUTTER: That's the trick... they totally won't. They'll be so UNinteresting that you won't mind if they are part of the grisly torture or random violence.
FX EXEC: *sigh* They will be speaking English, right? SUTTER: Eh... sorta. But that's the hook! Their 'lines' and the situations they find themselves in will be SO droll that you'll HOPE they meet the Bastard Executioner! FX EXEC: Sutter, I just don't think...
SUTTER: BUT WAIT! My wife says she'll play a pagan priestess! FX EXEC: Well everyone loved Leela and Peg Bundy... Can she do a British accent? SUTTER: Not at all! She's gonna go for a Eastern European with a speech impediment! FX EXEC: Kurt, you know we like you but...
SUTTER: I'll do the full season for 32,000 dollars, including sets and costumes that somehow seem incorrect. And if anyone catches on then we'll just add hints of nudity and more violence! FX EXEC: Mr Sutter, you've got a DEAL!
Shingeki no kyojin (2015)
Failure in Filmmaking
When I first heard that this movie was in production I was both pessimistic and intrigued. The premise of the television series interested me but could not gather my interest even after watching half a dozen episodes. Still, perhaps it could be made into something exceptional for the big screen? It could not.
I did not know the characters in-depth prior to watching the movie so their alteration from the TV series did not bother me. It was the -TERRIBLE- acting that did. If they spent more than an afternoon casting this film then they wasted their time. I can't think of a worse acted film and I've seen some bad ones. And the lack of theatrical talent was exposed when the characters attempted to explain their complexity of character through terribly drawn out and over-exposed scenes. I'm not Japanese so perhaps there is a cultural step that I'm missing? Because I really disliked 90% of the characters immediately... and it only got worse as it went along.
The reason it got 4stars and not 1 was they actually did an excellent job with the titans! The disturbing looking, lumbering monstrosities were exceptionally frightening. Their portrayal was the saving grace of the film but... I was still looking at my watch midway through and grumbling about how there was 40 minutes left in the film. My mind began filling with things I'd rather be doing... mowing the lawn, getting dental surgery, listening to my girlfriend complain.
Maybe hardcore fans of the AoT series will love it... but I won't suggest it to anyone except by saying, "Wanna see one of the worst films I've ever witnessed?"
