The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
I don't get it
After seeing the imbd rating for this and reading a few things about it, I thought I'd give it a go. I love a good scare so thought this would be right up my street. I just don't get the hype. I didn't find it in the slightest bit scary which was my main reason for watching it. Like others, I seen it as more of a drama and not one I invested in. It felt like it could have been half the length than it was too. I'm exactly half way through it and I hate not seeing the end of things but I'm struggling to finish it. Ten episodes just seems way too many to tell this story. I really wanted to love this. Sorry if you do and strongly disagree with me!
Thriller: K Is for Killing (1974)
Bad, Really Bad
I cannot tell you how much you should avoid this episode. I'm a big fan of Thriller and will always excuse the dated aspect, but this is just absolutely awful. The 'humour' made me cringe so much I don't know how I got through it. Characters cracking jokes when they've got guns pointed in their faces and If they were funny jokes you might forgive it, but god they're not funny.
I realise I have not reviewed the episode at all here but I probably couldn't tell you what happened in it anyway. I was too busy fuming at wasting an hour of my well earned day off!
It was that bad I had to leave my first review to warn people.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Elvis (2022)
A Little Less Colonel Parker, A Little More Elvis Please
Despite the title of this review, I want to say I did really enjoy the movie overall but there were aspects of it that I found slightly irritating.
This isn't really a review, just a few thoughts after seeing it and I'm writing it because I've just got home after watching it. I am a big Elvis fan and after reading all the great reviews and hearing from a few non Elvis fans how great it was, I couldn't wait to see it.
Austin Butler was incredible. Although he doesn't really look like Elvis, he had clearly studied Elvis as his movements on stage and off were spot on. The biggest compliment I could pay him is I did feel like I was watching the actual Elvis many times during it.
My main gripe with the film is the music. I read a lengthy review on here stating what was important about this type of film but not once did it mention the music. It's all about the music with Elvis! They kept putting modern instrumentation over the songs which just totally took me out of the scene every time. There's nothing wrong with the original versions! I'm not sure if one song was left untouched. The other thing I didn't like was minor as all biopics mess with the chronology and miss big chunks of story out. I knew when I read the Presleys loved this film that the last five years of Elvis's life would be passed over and they pretty much were. You won't see a fat Elvis here. Having said that, this film was through the Colonels eyes so maybe it wasn't necessary. I think the Colonel saying at Elvis's funeral "This changes nothing" tells you everything you need to know about him and how he felt about Elvis. That wasn't in the film by the way but maybe it should have been.
I don't think It's the masterpiece everybody is saying it is but it is very good and anything that puts Elvis back in the spotlight is never a bad thing.
