Reviews
Remote Viewing (2018)
1 star reviews are spot-on.
Props are laughable. I think they must have borrowed props from a high school drama club. Acting is mediocre at best, and some of it is textbook bad acting. Devices are ham-handed. There are no plot complications, just plot ideas thrown in for idk, artistic effect or lack of self control. Looking for something positive to say here... Hmmm. Might have to get back to you on that one.
Towards the end, I started wondering if Remote Viewing is just a film makers hoax, where they just are trying to waste as much of your time as possible. Like a directors version of a crank call, but less fun than calling a mortuary and asking for group rates.
Just when I thought it could not get worse, I check the reviews and guess what? One of the actors gave it a positive review. Are you kidding me? Ridiculous. Don't call attention to yourself here Tim. You should just hope this thing fades into the memory hole. Tell everyone you were in college and just "experimenting" or something if Remote Viewing ever comes up.
There was nothing believable anywhere along the way. The story in concept? I don't know because everything else was just so horrible. It probably works out as a great story in a 12 year old writers head, who made the film as a horror movie for 8 year olds. And I mean 8 year old amish kids, because even coca cola commercials are scarier than this waste of time.
OH! Positive idea here: I would recommend watching this to any discouraged aspiring film maker. No matter how bad your project is, watching this film should make you feel better about your writing/directing skills, and inspire you that you are not literally the worst there ever was.
Skyscraper (2018)
Solid action, deserves better score
Does not deserve the 6.2 it has right now. Don't listen to the haters that were expecting a Scorsese masterpiece in Die Hard setting. I think the lowest scores are from the haters who were disappointed in the lack of gratuitous Neve Campbell scenes.
Skyscraper is a solid action flick. Fast paced all the way through, no downtime at all. Explosions, fires, stunts, shooting (not much car chases w/e). Production values are up, acting is solid, cinematography is good, sound is good, effects are top notch. I don't know what else the haters are expecting from Skyscraper. It is exactly what it is supposed to be.
If you are expecting Transformers or Jurassic Park 1, yes you will be disappointed SMH. On the other hand, if you go in with reasonable expectations, you will be glad you didn't wait for the DVD. I went 3d but it didn't really add much. Take the family, have fun.
The Life of David Gale (2003)
FAIL
This film struck me as one written with an anti-death penalty agenda. The point of the film is to demonstrate that a person was executed for a murder he did not commit. It fails miserably.
As far as I know, rape is not usually a capital offense, however murder often is. Thus, he is really being executed for murder. The first twist is that the woman actually committed suicide, and we are supposed to think "Oh, so he really is innocent" right? Well that is wrong. Because later we find that he actually was there. Yes she taped and strangled herself, BUT he was present all along. In my book and I am 99.999% sure, in the eyes of the law, that does make you guilty. Accessory to suicide is the same as accessory to murder, and the most likely outcome is that a jury would find (as I do) that coldly standing there watching that woman struggle and die is far more heinous than an unhinged psycho acting out in his psychosis.
Bottom line, he was not executed for a crime he did not commit. In fact he was executed for something less evil than what he really did.
He added a $500k swindle to the deal to give money to his family.
AND He led Bitsy to believe that she was responsible for his execution because she could not save him in time. Adding insult to injury, he reveals to her "Nah! I really was there the whole time. Don't tell anyone though, because I'm supposed to be innocent", like that is supposed to make her feel better.
The only way she would feel better is by realizing he really did deserve to die. He watched that woman struggle, when obviously she had changed her mind and he let her die anyway, and on top of that, made Bitsy feel responsible for an innocent man's execution. She is supposed to feel better because he lied to her and used her? She will feel better because he was executed as he well should have been.
The greatest tragedy of all: Read the reviews. None of the supporters here realize at all that they just proved their own point invalid. Somehow the death penalty is wrong, but murder and suicide is okay, as long as it supports the left agenda?
Annihilation (2018)
Excellent sci fi with originality
I am glad I did not read any reviews or see any trailers before I saw this movie. I did not know what to expect, and that was exactly what the movie delivered. It was an awesome movie, but I only gave it 9/10 because ... I almost never give 10 stars. Put it this way, despite SMG completely wrecking our order and serving very cold, very late food, I still enjoyed the film - and I really hate cold hamburger and fries.
Sure there are people who will not like this movie, and if you are a nitpicker, then perhaps any film that can be described as "mind-bending" will not be for you. If you are ready though, to wander through a bizarre story, part sci-fi part scary, part thought-provoking, then this is for you. I found I was still thinking about it days later.
Very glad I did not wait for video, this film deserves a good quality theater. Don't wait for second run!
