M.F.A. (2017)
Hugely satisfying payoff
I loved this movie because the director went all out. Hugely satisfying if you hate rape culture, hate rape, and hate ignorance. This was therapy.
I felt the film was well researched and thought out. There was meticulous attention to detail on each and every scene.
For the haters that think the rape vigilante didn't go far enough? Not much revenge? I guess you've never been mutilated by scissors... LOL. Wow some of the comments are just so mind numbing. I guess that's the society we live in.
It's not a man hater movie, it's a call to attention on an important topic and conversation that is finally relevant. Some people want to be a part of the conversation, others do not. Watch the movie if you want to be a part of the conversation. There's plenty of likable men/characters. But our heroine is a female badass who takes the law into her own hands and dishes revenge on the men who committed atrocities. She dishes revenge without apology. But just to clarify, female killing male movie does not amount to "man-hater movie." If that were the case, then all the movies made about men killing women should be categorized as "woman-hater movies."
So yeah, if you want to see a rape survivor dish some major pay back to the bros that ruthlessly rape and get away with it... this is the film to see. Francesca Eastwood is so badass. I loved the ending.
The Polka King (2017)
One of the Funniest Movies with Heart I've seen in a long time
I loved the film so much I watched it again the next day... and again the next day. It's been a long time since a film got me that excited. Which is why I gave it 10 stars.
A few reasons why this film rocks:
1) Interesting and funny characters. The performances were in the vein of farce comedy, but still believable.
2) Brilliant writing. Ultimately the viewer understands that Jack Black's character is committing a crime by orchestrating an elaborate pyramid scheme under the guise of several legitimate business operations (that cannot cover the overhead costs - therefore pyramid investors are necessary to keep the businesses afloat), but we still sympathize and understand very clearly the motivations of each character. We know it's a train wreck waiting to happen, but our criminal hero doesn't know that.
3) The story is very real/relevant. It's based on a true story, and the themes are clear and cause us to reflect where our values as a society are placed. The film delivers insight.
4) The film broadens horizons. It's not another sensationalized criminal story (where Hollywood paints the bad guy into a positive light). It's a far more layered and introspective balance.
5) We get to hear lots of Polka music. The film is dealing with some really dark undertones, but it still manages to be extremely funny and heartfelt. The Polka music keeps the tone of the film at a happy balance.
Overall - this movie deserves a way higher rating.
