White Bird in a Blizzard (2014)
Surprised but not shocked!
Spoiler Alert. I agree with most of the reviewers that gave this movie 5 Stars or better. I was totally surprised by the ending and didn't see it coming. Maybe that's a problem and in a way a cop out. The Director/Writer simply threw in this surprise ending and quickly wrapped it up with a few talk-over words from the main character. This was a bit lacking in regard to giving the viewer a satisfied resolution to the issues raised throughout the film. I understand that this story was from a book by the same title & that the ending is quite different. Now curious about that. Most of the reviewers that also read the book said the book was better. I think that's the case most of the time. I went to Amazon to purchase it, but just too expensive. Not sure why but I'll wait for it to be published at a cheaper price.
The Magic of Belle Isle (2012)
"Never Stop Looking For What's Not There"
OK so a successful & popular writer who has lost his voice & currently drinks a bit secludes himself at a lake cottage for the summer. Of course there is a beautiful, charming and gracious woman who is staying next door. Oh yeah also getting divorced which of course makes her eligible & available. So, doesn't this happen all the time? Forgetabout it. It's a movie so just roll with it, accept it, embrace it & love it! This is a well written & presented tale. Virginia Madsen is a gem. From Candyman to Sideways to this. Her straight forward, sincere & soft spoken way of delivering lines just knocks me out. Morgan Freeman plays his part and delivers like a true pro. Sort of makes it all seem real. Just a nice film to watch. Sorry it wasn't enough for the jaded movie goers and critics, but really who cares what they think. Give this movie a try and when the credits roll you will feel good or at least a little better than you felt before you tuned in. After all isn't that what movies are supposed to really be about?
Hector and the Search for Happiness (2014)
The "Indiana Jones" of Happiness!
This is a well written, performed and presented film. In addition to it's basic entertainment value, it also presented some really great points to think about. We are all searching for happiness and this is a simple all be it exaggerated story of one man's Don Quixoteish quest for that happiness that was eluding him. The lessons he learned are worth repeating: Hector: 1. Making comparisons can spoil your happiness. Hector: 2. A lot of people think happiness means being richer or more important. Hector: 3. Many people only see happiness in their future. Hector: 4. Happiness could be the freedom to love more than one woman at the same time. Hector: 5. Sometimes happiness is not knowing the whole story. Hector: 6. Avoiding unhappiness is not the road to happiness. Hector: 7. Does this person bring you predominantly a. up b. down? Hector: 8. Happiness is answering your calling. Hector: 9. Happiness is being loved for who you are. Hector: 10. Sweet Potato Stew! Hector: 11. Fear is an impediment to happiness. Hector: 12. Happiness is feeling completely alive. Hector: 13. Happiness is knowing how to celebrate. Hector: 14. Listening is loving. Hector: 15. Nostalgia is not what it used to be.
La chambre bleue (2014)
Sleazy French Guy Has An Affair That Ends Badly!
Just watched this movie & thought it interesting enough to read the original novel from whence it came when it's published in English in early 2016. What cracks me up in all these French Flicks is the Male Stars are always these little sleazy, wimpy, unclean looking weird guys and the Female Stars are always attractive, younger (and taller) women. For instance in this Flick this is exactly the case. The Mistress is attractive, probably a foot taller and 10 years younger than the Male Star. Why she repeatedly jumps in bed with this guy is a wonder to me. Maybe I'm just envious, but really? It must just be annoying for French Actresses to always have to play lovers, wife's, mistresses to these Frogs. On the other hand it must be great to be a French Man! I'd be really curious if any female reviewers really find the Male Star of this movie attractive or worthy of their attentions.
