Decent show with problems
24 February 2024
I'm interested in the Estonia for as long as I can remember and when I first heard of a show about the Estonia being in development by the people who brought us 'Chernobyl' (2019), I was beyond excited. I was pretty bummed out by the mixed reactions after the show aired in some territories. Now that I've seen it myself, I get the criticism. Kind of.

Positives first: the show is beautifully shot. I'm usually not a fan of shaky cam but here it just works. We're always very close to the characters, which makes the scenes feel even more powerful and intimate. The soundtrack is amazing! Haunting even. The performances are also good. Also, the show has a high production value and especially the sinking scenes are intense and look impressive (honestly they gave me nightmares).

The problem is that the show is simply too long. The aftermath of the sinking and the inverstigation is stretched out way too much and when it comes to a close, it feels unsatisfying. The scattered way of storytelling and ths constant time jumps also stand in the way of real tension.

Ultimately, the show would have been better if it was maybe 2 episodes shorter. It's well made and at times very tense and emotional but it lacks a dramatic thread and a consistent pace. This is still a recommendation though. Now please release this show outside of Scandinavia for the world to see it! ;)

Pretty Decent !
1 June 2021
On paper, Psychic Detective Yakumo is nothing special. Like the name suggests, it is about a young detective with spritual powers and his female sidekick. What sets this show apart, however, is for 1) the cases (which are intriguing and full of suspense) and 2) the characters (which I've grown to love so much that I started reading the source material). The animation is good across the board, however, there are some episodes where the animation looks great and a few in which the animation looks...not so great. Now when I sead the cases are intriguing and suspenseful, this does not hold true for all of them. There are two episodes which have nothing to do with the source material and that the animators came up with, namely episodes two and six. Now, I have seen this show a couple of times over the years but these two I almost always skip. They're pretty dull to be honest, and are only there for character development reasons. Funnily, Where this anime shines the most however is the soundtrack. Honestly, if this was a more popular show, I am pretty convinced that this soundtrack would be renouned as one of the best soundtracks ever. I listen to it on a regular basis, it's honestly so great. Same goes for the opening song of the show, which slightly changes every three episodes (a cool gimick!).

All in all, Psychic Detective Yakumo is nothing too special. It is its execution, however, that makes this show worthwhile and over the years, it has become one that I've grown to love.

7.5/10.

Alien at its best
10 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I am fed up with defending this movie but it can't be that a modern masterpiece like this gets torn in pieces by you people. Yes, everybody has an opinion but it's impossible that this gets so many one star ratings. So many dumb complaints, I can't even take it ha ha. I really don't know what you want. First you want the Xenomorph back and once you get it you are complaining that it shouldn't be in the movie. Well that's great. If you are all incapable of understanding a sci-fi movie that has so much class and is different from all the garbage we got in the past years than go watch AVP. Alien: Covenant has a great look, an haunting performance by Michael Fassbender as the android David and an amazing score by Jed Kurzel! Plus the movie is totally frightening. The Backburster scene got me on the edge of my seat and the Chestburster scene made me tear up because it was so beautiful, sad and disturbing at the same time! Also the Cargo Lift Scene was pure awesomeness. This movie blew my mind even though I has huge expectations, Thanks Ridley Scott! I really hope you get to end your epic Saga.
