Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones (2019)
One of the few genuinely funny people out there.
I rarely laugh at comedians, but Dave had me laughing the whole time.
I think it's because the topics are real and genuinely delivered, the jokes always go in a different direction to where you think they're going, and you're always left thinking about possible contradictions in what society thinks and what is reality.
Strong political and social messages in such a funny manner with fantastic punch lines, timing and delivery.
Such a fresh set, he has his fingers right on the pulse of conflicting thoughts in peoples minds on current issues and knows exactly how to make people laugh at themselves and question the norms.
I don't understand why there are people out there that can't take a step back and think about what message or question he is asking, instead of picking out words and red flagging them, like their real life is a twitter algorithm blocking and reporting naughty words.
Lords of Chaos (2018)
Wasted opportunity.
The real life story of what happened in the Black Metal scene in the early 90s is an enthralling, insane, and equally disgusting crime story about murders, suicide, jealousy, revenge, egoism, mass vandalism, court cases, jail, seriously right wing politics, and the scourge of society. One could have given it a similar platform to some of the Netflix series like for Ted Bundy, or OJ Simpson, and it would be edge of your seat stuff.
But what we get here is some kids cartoon version. With parties, blowjobs, made up girlfriends, jokes, horseplay, and a total mockery of all the main characters and the events for humour purposes.
I legitimately think that this movie is trying to troll the scene and the story by flipping all the characters and making up their personalities to seem like they're the kind of people you'd associate with a nerdy internet forum. Instead of some seriously messed up individuals that were in the wrong place at the wrong time for these crazy set of events to take place. They've really made a serious crime story into a teen party flick of some kind.
This movie may appeal to some people, not sure who, cause if you want some teen flick there are much better ones out there, maybe it's for people that have heard of the bands involved but don't want to hear the real disgusting story, but want to laugh at the edgy kids from the 90s that used to wear the face paint and make the loud noisy music in Scandinavia.
Free Solo (2018)
Extremely disappointing and frustrating.
I was waiting with baited breath for the documentary to show Alex training, climbing, and progressing to the final epic climax of conquering El Capitan. And i was waiting, and waiting, and waiting...
Not only was the lack of climbing frustrating, it was doubly frustrating cause the climbing was replaced by his annoying girlfriend and her feelings. Which is possibly the last thing I'd want to be watching.
I understand that romances are an integral part of stories and movies, and there's obviously a demand for it in general considering the amount of it on TV and the big screen.
But in a documentary about climbing El Capitan free solo. One of the most amazing, scary, and difficult tasks someone has ever done. For 90% of the movie to be about their relationship and the emotional disconnect between Alex's climbing and his girlfriend, with footage of them doing mundane things, rather than the climb, preparation, and background/history of Alex and his climbing, is just the most underwhelming things i have ever watched regarding mountaineering.
So disappointing.
180° South (2010)
Contrived.
I wish I could switch off my brain like some of the people from the other reviews which turned me onto this movie in the first place but I simply cannot.
I don't believe a single thing in this movie, it seems like the whole movie was contrived to promote a political message and everything in it is scripted.
Worst thing is that I am all for the message of this film but cannot stand to have the wool pulled over my eyes just to get this message across to me.
They should have just set it out from the get go, introduced us to the Patagonia and North Face guys, explained their situation, and said they'd like to make a movie and take an adventure to show the viewers what they are trying to save instead of making up a fake documentary with these characters and story line.
What a shame, if they were just honest with the viewer it could have been such a great movie.
