Just Before I Go (2014)
A man pushed in a corner decides to do the extreme, commit suicide, but not before tying up loose ends.
This film was a very fantastic movie. The subject matter is serious but the delivery was comical and very enlightening. I enjoyed watching this man struggle with life like we all do at some point or another. Suicide is not a joking matter and this movie portrayed it in such a way it was not offensive. The director did an amazing job giving background to all parties involved. The protagonist had a very rough start in life, losing his father, having a very overbearing teacher bully him in front of his peers, being teased and picked on by a fellow student and catching his fiancé in the act of her affair. The poor man was heartbroken and lost. He then decided on the solution of absolution, commit suicide. After returning home, he finds his old teacher, the one who humiliated him in front of his class on numerous occasions, and planned on telling her just how miserable she made him but ended up talking to a sick woman who was incoherent on her death bed. He meets his teachers niece who has her own story that explains even more about her grandmother's bitterness. He stays with his brother and sister-in-law and their kids and sees the imperfections in what he viewed as normalcy. Catches up with a lost love and his old school bully who has just as much life issues he's dealing with. A lot of what he went through as a child is finally coming to light and this is really more of a coming of age story than a suicide story. It makes one rethink the things in life that make people who they are. Just bravo!
Magic Mike XXL (2015)
The characters from the prequel are back in the saddle for one more ride.
After reading all the negative reviews, I am appalled. I actually enjoyed this movie over the first for several reasons. The first Magic Mike had too much "romance" in it. I wanted to watch handsome men dance, not find love. And I believe with the sequel Magic Mike XXL I got it. I loved the dialog in this also. There were a lot of women, more believable than the teeny boppers from the first, that had sexual awakenings. It was the full female experience. The men made the women feel like queens and I loved every bit of it! The dancing was even better, a lot more moves I've never seen before. As far as their age being almost forty and some were older than forty, so what? They still got it. I prefer to look at sexy men, I have never put a number on it. Besides, it's a movie people. Enjoy it for what it is. Empowering women and teaching the men a few things in the process.
Ex Machina (2014)
Ex Machina explores the world of Artificial Intelligence. This film is the experimental interviewing process between man and machine..
This new take on AI robots is done so beautifully. I personally have never had much interest in scientific studies but this movie piqued my interest more than I had expected it to. And it certainly was not a disappointment. Of course, the jargon concerning codes and anything remotely scientific was at times a little difficult for me to follow but as the movie went on, everything was well explained. I definitely would suggest this movie to all my friends. I would not, however, allow my son to watch it until he is at least 17, given the fact that it does have sexual situations and full female nudity. The language is not too offensive and the storyline never strays so if you just so happen to miss a scene or two you won't be lost. The only thing I could suggest when watching this film is to have an open mind. Of course as of right now, our society has not conquered the AI inquisition just yet, so of course it isn't real but I have to say, my curiosity was not disappointed with this movie. The conversations in the film have purpose and I found myself viewing this machine as a human being with emotion. In an almost child-like state, this machine is viewing the world for what it is and it is so very intriguing to watch something that is so intelligent struggle with common situations and trying to understand what we tried to when we were children. It's almost as if we get to observe an actual account rather than just watching another movie. It is moving to say the least.
Perfect Sisters (2014)
Based on the true story of two Canadian sisters who murdered their alcoholic mother after she relapses.
Perfect Sisters surprised me a bit. I'm familiar with the murder and a tad familiar with the details of the case, however, I was not expecting to actually excuse the girls sin when I viewed this film. I have to say the director did a fantastic job portraying the girls to the best of his knowledge especially since this case was so hush hush about the identity of the two sisters. At the beginning of the film, the home videos shown was a very nice touch. It helps the viewer become emotionally involved. I was rooting for the mother at first, moving to a new town, starting fresh with a new job, and all that jazz, but, she relapses shortly after her and her three children move in to their apartment. Now the sisters are left to pick up the pieces and take care of their younger brother while attending school themselves. A lot of responsibility for young girls, it is something they shouldn't have to do. When the girls decide it's time to call protective services on their mother, the response was so alarming. It really spoke decibels of how lousy the system is. To top things off, the girls have to deal with whatever trash their mother drags into the home. So murder seemed to be the only plausible answer here. It is truly sad how much those two girls dealt with. I gave this movie a 6 because while the story line is real, the acting was a tad off but all in all it was a decent movie. Even had moments of humor, twisted humor of course. Hard to believe that children are able to do some of the things they do and not lose a wink of sleep.
