Maximum Overdrive (1986)
oh dear lord...
What a load of 5h1t. Stephen King should stick to writing decent horror novels and not attempt to direct a 10th rate p155 poor horror film. The basic premise is poor in the outset but scenes of being attacked by a drinks vending machine along with trucks that suddenly drive themselves are beyond a joke. The mysterious green mist that shrouds the earth in the opening credits, caused by the tail of some comet is to blame. Even the opening music of AC/DC can't save this banal piece of dross. Avoid at all costs.
The Jungle Book (2016)
Stunning film
Superb, other than Idris Elba who is totally wrong for Shere Khan. Jeremy Irons would have been better. Watch this film though and just smile throughout, it's a wonderful version of a classic and Disney have raised the bar for CGI animals/characterisations. The story is a fantastic recreation of a closer version to Kipling's original tales but there's enough similarity and familiarity to the original Disney classic animation we grew up with. I wondered about the musical numbers being redone as to whether they were appropriate and relevant, but I enjoyed this film so much that I let this doubt pass by.
Bit scary for younger children, so I'd suggest about 8 years and upwards. A highly recommended film, opens the doors for more remakes that couldn't be achieved prior to the investment and time spent on the CGI. Great film.
Spectre (2015)
(00)7 out of 10...
It's good, it's entertaining, it's not great. I found it a little pedestrian and predictable in places, wondering where the tension was going to come from. Waltz is not used to menace or terrify anywhere near enough. Craig doesn't build on the 'damaged/wrecked/possibly over the hill' agent he was in Skyfall. The passing mentions to the devastation he's left in his wake seem to be merely passing mentions and are not thoroughly explored psychologically within Bond's mindset. Not as good as Casino Royale or Skyfall, probably on a par with Quantum. The theme tune summed it up for me, a bit limp, meanders around a bit, doesn't really have much drama too it and a bit forgettable. Just like Quantum!
Why they didn't follow up Casino Royale with a decent up to date remake of Live And Let Die (decent storyline to destabilise the British economy with gold coins - economic terrorism? - is a real shame) and follow the original sequence that Fleming wrote in the original books and you'd have some decent stories that fans would buy in to...
