Under the Shadow (2016)
Decent, but far from GOD TIER
I had pretty high expectations for this movie due to all the 8+ reviews on here. I did, however, fail to realize that a lot of other people here were viewing this movie through a slightly different lens.
If you are the kind of person that goes to film festivals and regard most horror movies as garbage, you will probably give Under the Shadow 8 or 9. This due to the fact that this movie would be better labeled as a drama thriller, much like the Babadook.
If you watch this movie expecting horror comparable to GOD TIER movies like Sinster and Conjuring 1, you will be a bit disappointed. There are a few decent scares and the setting is a bit creepy, but it will not be sufficient to scare a vetted horror fan.
Under the Shadow is certainly worth the watch if you can if you are looking for something similar to the Babadook, but you should consider watching something else if you are looking for real horror!
Unfriended (2014)
You should watch this movie
Read the preview if you haven't already-> i'm not going to talk about the plot. This movie is not for everyone. However, if you have grown up in a culture similar to the one these teenagers are living in (or if you have kids that age) you will get probably get a kick out of watching this movie. I personally watch A LOT of horror movies and i've become fairly desensitized, but this movie genuinely made me scared and even a bit depressed, which is a good thing. The acting was as good as it should be, there was no cheap jump scares, and it relies more on uncertainty and fear of the unknown than on monsters with scary make-up. This movie builds up tension very nicely, and at no point did it make me lose interest. I would have given this movie a 10 if it wasn't for the fact that the girl was using her computer like a 60 year old chimpanzee with long, greasy fingers and a round, bald head. It simply feels a bit fake as I can scarcely imagine that a girl her age would handle her computer the way she did. You might be a bit bothered by this if you use the same operating system as her.
It Follows (2014)
It was entertaining but I could not stop thinking about the number of solutions that didn't occur to them..
Pretty entertaining movie, though it was not particularly scary. The following sentences may contain spoilers (but probably not, especially if you've watched the trailer). The main character basically had to pass on the curse (which is some kind of entity that always walk after you) by sleeping with someone. Why could she not pass it to a guy friend and the whole group could put their money together and send him on a holiday to Thailand? The curse would travel faster than the monster would be able to walk. Perhaps i'm wrong; it might not occur to young members of the American middle class that they came pass it on the someone abroad. Still, the main character and her friends are not really that imaginative -- she could also have slept with a trucker..Either way, I gave this movie a 6 because, if you choose to look away from the obvious plot holes, it's a pretty entertaining movie. You'll probably have a good time watching it if you like horror movies.
