These should not be labeled documentaries
14 March 2022
This is conspiracy theory BS and should be labeled as such. Or pseudo documentaries at best. Fact check some of Greer's claims and you'll find the truth about his lies and mischaracterizations.

The Unholy (2021)

Oh right. It's bad, but it's also PG13.
31 May 2021
I was so disappointed after watching the credits role and realizing that the great Sam Raimi was one of the producers. Then again, it's PG13, so maybe I'm just too old and have seen too many of these below average holy-horror movies that the tired clichés are meant to not be so tired and so cliched for the middle school crowd.

The moderately above average Jeffrey Dean Morgan does a decent enough job keeping the wheels on the bus at the beginning and is believable enough as an alcoholic down on his luck reporter, but once the movie gets going the humor they likely injected into his character as an afterthought, feels out of place.

Cricket Brown is actually a bright spot, but you can tell that she's learned her chops on stage in theater because some of her performance is a bit over the top as a rural town girl from nowhere Massachusetts. She probably has some future in screen acting, but her facial expressions would likely shine on stage.

As usual Cary Elwes needs to decide before filming which weird American accent he's going for and stick to it. Maybe I should just get used to it and pretend that he's from a region of the country that I've never been to that's full of Americans who sound like they're very lightly making fun of Brits, but I just can't.

Poor Katie Aselton half the time looks like she's genuinely typical nice, sweet Katie Aselton, and the other half looks like she's realized what an awful movie she's agreed to be in.

Diogo Mordato and William Sadler are probably the best two actors in this film, but they're limited in screen time. The extras in this are AWFUL. I'm sorry to these folks, because they're likely locals or something, but oh man, they do not help this movie out at all. I definitely blame the director for this, but whoa they're bad. Some of them straight up are overacting like they think they might be discovered in this crap heap.

The first half of the movie, while still lazy and disappointing, doesn't prepare you for how quickly the second half becomes a trash pile of jump scares, unimaginative dialogue, and stupid horror tropes.

If you're over the age of 20 and have seen your fair share of horror movies, do yourself a favor and avoid this. If you're 15 give or take, and are trying to take someone out on a date and want them to clutch your arm at every jump scare or want to clutch their arm at every jump scare, and realllllly don't care about anything other than that...meh...go ahead and watch it. Just try not to pay too much for it.

Unhinged (I) (2020)

At least it's a tight 90 min

Worth a look if you can't find anything else to watch, like a straight forward thriller, and can overlook very clear character flaws.

Impressive for the budget, but still not well directed/produced
22 February 2021
The director really really needed to seek second opinions on much of this one. Just cliche after cliche... Example 1: a robot gets close, a human character hiding, the robot moves on, character let's out a sigh of relief and cries a little. Expect this to happen 7-10 times. This is far from the only scene that will repeat over and over in a movie that is 45 too long.

Exactly what you'd expect
5 September 2020
It's basically like watching a few mildly annoying people walk through a very lazy haunted house... But on zoom. If you watched this the day after your city's shelter in place order, you might have found this amusing, but 6 months in you'll just be glad it's only 60 minutes. I appreciate the conditions in which it was made, but I can also picture the filmmakers sitting on a zoom call (Rob, you're on mute... Oh, no you go. No you go... Sorry, you cut out for a moment) literally listing their favorite horror movie moments and, by committee, deciding which they're use in their film.

Mislabelled Movie
16 June 2020
I'm not sure if the 1 star reviews all found about this movie from horror sites but this is DEFINITELY not a horror movie. If you watched this expecting a mindless, heartless creature feature you're gonna be disappointed. Listen to the soundtrack and you'll understand that this movie has a lot more to offer than that. I mean the Lisa Loeb song, Stay is in this movie...I'd probably label this a horror comedy with heart.

Summer of 84 (2018)

Something to watch on a lazy weekend...if you remember the 80's
27 August 2018
Acting: 4:10 Direction: 4:10 Story: 6:10 Nostalgia factor: 6:10

This definitely feels like a movie made by committee. It can't quite decide what it wants to be and that probably partially stems from the number of cooks in the kitchen. The "child" actors do their absolute best to embody the trope they were given but it's clear they didn't do enough homework (or the directors didn't do enough homework). They also weren't directed to avoid the obvious Canadian accents. Why not just make the movie take place in Canada? I'm sure the producers were to blame for that...also maybe it's more believable that a serial killer might exist in America?

As far as directing...this is painful at times. Scenes cut off before the characters resolve their scene and then the main story jarringly transitions back in. There are a few times where they pay obvious homage to movies or culture from the 80's but it's way to few and far between.

It honestly feels like the filmmakers were trying to capitalize on the success of stranger things and just failed.

It's not a huge failure though and I wouldn't say I wasted my time but I fall to see any argument for rating this higher than a 5 or 6 (and 6 is pushing it).

Well done found footage/unknown killer/conspiracy pseudo-doc - Similar to The Bay.
25 February 2018
I guess that's too many genres for one movie, but I think they're all accurate. The story revolves around an apparent spree-killing in a tiny, destitute Arizona border town near Nogales, Mx. The main suspect is also an amatuer photog and though not initially found, when a roll of film that he had taken during the entire night of the killings is developed, the story takes on a much darker tone. I have a soft spot in my heart for low budget horror films, but this one really is pretty high quality. Only one or two of the actors couldn't pull off the doc/reality part (the sherriff being the most annoying of them). There is a bit of a twist at the end, when one of the characters' book is published, and a "cover-up" is potentially revealed, but for the most part this fizzles at the end unfortunately. Over all, it's really well done for the resources they had, and the photo vs video aspect of the found "footage" was unique and really something I hadn't seen before. If you like "The Bay" but weren't really into the heavy-handedness and lack of "fright" you may just like this a lot.
