Station Eleven (2021)
Here's why I like it.
I have only watched the first episode. However I liked the pace and dialogue. I'm sick and tired of over-acted, dizzying fast story lines, pointless dialogue - which I think 90% of movies have today. Maybe I'll hate this show later but so far I like it. It's not something to put on in the background while you clean the house. I think I get the premise - we survive a pandemic (or don't) and then what? We can't stay in survival mode forever. This isn't a typical apocalyptic show so move on if that's what you are expecting.
Ma (2019)
Tired old victim story - throw in race and you have a terrible movie
Here, I'll save you the trouble of reading. Humiliated naive black girl embarrassed by stupid white kids in high school seeks revenge as an adult on those who mostly didn't do anything to her but she is going to mess up their lives anyway. If you are that stupid in school and - no matter what race you are- you aren't that dumb as this movie portrays, then have your parent(s) homeschool you and save society from such a tired old stereotyped situation. I get it - kids get tricked but this movie is wrong on every level. I went to a very white and then de- segregated school growing up and this this scenario is fabricated , not interesting, not worth being cobbled together as a movie and maybe should of been some loosely conjoined millennial's YouTube video attempt at social justice . This is a sad stupid low IQ movie. No matter what race you are.
Us (2019)
Could not finish. Not worthy of watching.
Read other bad reviews because they echo what I would say 100% and then add something else. Total racial undertones run through this. Trashy stupid white family with superficial mom and drunk dad gets killed and intelligent, sound, well adjusted family of color escapes. Okay you could read it differently but I've seen this before and I'm tired of the stereotyping. I lived 30 minutes from Santa Cruz for 30 years and this move is pure and utter trash. IQ lowering garbage and attempted brainwashing. I love to watch a good mind numbing stupid horror flick but this movie is MORE than pointless. I hated every character, I hated the reference to eating rabbits. I hated the attempt at humor. I hated the plot. I could not finish it (Hulu HBO add on) and turned it off. It was a total waste of my time.
A Quiet Place (2018)
A creature movie done right
In the era now of "don't look at the monsters", "don't speak to the monsters", "no idea how to kill the monsters".... this one got it right. I wasn't scared by Birdbox. The Silence was okay but maybe a bit 80'sish. I cared about the characters in this one. You didn't need much dialogue because everything was conveyed beautifully through character interactions, facial expressions, choices, and pain. It delivered on some beautifully horrific creatures. I didn't care where they came from - clearly some infestation type of situation. Sound mixing and cinematography were excellent. I was sitting straight up and leaning forward off the couch much of the time. Type of movie where you start yelling at the characters - directing them on what to do and then realize, be quiet! Loved it.
The Nun (2018)
Nuns are scary and so is this movie
I thought the scary nun was actually Marilyn Manson. It wasn't my favorite movie and the other Conjuring movies are far above this one, however, I'm tired of what I am reading on IMDB. Reviews aren't matching what I am finding at all. The concept was good. The action kept going. Not a lot of sappy slow downs which I hate in horror movies. It tied in at the end and wrapped up very well. Would watch it again if I was bored.
Bird Box (2018)
Not The Happenning But Similiar
Unknown attack. Trees attack? Or is it the trees? Human created demons? Put aside nature for a moment. The acting was believable, I cared what happened to everyone. Dialogue was fantastic. Bullock who is never been my favorite was superb. I cried at two points in the movie and sat in the edge of my seat the rest of the time. Well done overall. I felt I was along for the character's journey, yelling out, telling them what to do. Believable plot.
